Man pleads guilty to PTC. apt. shooting

A Newnan man pled guilty last week to shooting a Peachtree City man at the Camden Apartments off MacDuff Parkway last June.

Joel Alan Chambers was sentenced by Fayette County Superior Court Judge Fletcher Sams to three years in prison followed by 17 years on probation.

Chambers, 49, of Medallion Park in Newnan was arrested June 23, 2013 after getting into an argument with Robert Lee Thompson Jr. and shooting him in the chest, police said. Read More»

The old Newnan Hospital on Jackson Street in Newnan is about to get a new look for the 21st century. Rather than a customary groundbreaking, a “building breaking” ceremony was held Sept. 9 to announce the beginning of the project that will transform the old hospital into the University of West Georgia-Newnan Center that will open in January 2015. Woman rents gun at store, then shoots herself

A Peachtree City woman walked into Atlanta Range and Ordnance shooting range in Newnan Sept. 6, rented a firearm and target lane, and — after making sure no other customers or store personnel were close by — shot herself to death.

The 48-year-old woman had a Wynnmeade Parkway address in Peachtree City.

Newnan Police reports said a call was dispatched at 1:18 p.m. in reference to a suicide by gunshot inside the business. Officers subsequently collected evidence indicating that the woman entered the business with the intention of using a firearm to commit suicide. Read More»

Groundbreaking ceremony slated for Monday at Newnan site

Monday morning will mark the continued expansion of educational opportunities in Newnan and Coweta County with the groundbreaking of the new University of West Georgia campus on Jackson Street.

The campus will be located on the property of the old Newnan Hospital located at 80 Jackson Street near downtown. The $21 million construction project is expected to produce an annual economic impact of $1.4-3.4 million. Read More»

The Coweta Fayette Rotary Club will be hosting its fifth annual Chassis For Charity Car Show August 24 at Junction Lanes in Newnan. 
The show hosts car, truck and bike enthusiast from all over Georgia and Alabama. 

This year’s show will have over 23 classes for cars, trucks and bikes with 1st and 2nd place trophies in each class.  They will also have Best In Show, Best Paint, Best Interior, Best Engine and People’s Choice.  There will be commemorative dash plaques for the first 50 entries and goodie bags for the first 100 entries.  Read More»

Boy resuscitated after near-drowning

A life-threatening situation came to a good end last week when Newnan firefighters resuscitated a 3-year-old boy after a near-drowning in the Summer Grove pool.

Capt. Damon Rosser said firefighters Richard Scott and Jim Murphy were among the four firefighters arrived at the scene within 3-4 minutes after being dispatched at approximately 8:30 p.m. on July 24.

An adult female approached the firefighters carrying the near-lifeless child, Rosser said. Scott took the child and began administering CPR while Rosser called for an air flight helicopter. Read More»

Mr. Long was a retired Physicians Assistant for Internal Medicine with Dr. David and Joseph Foote. He also served his country in the US Army.
