Who is ‘racist’? — Part II

Thomas Sowell's picture

Around this time of year, I sometimes hear from parents who have been appalled to learn that the child they sent away to college to become educated has instead been indoctrinated with the creed of the left. They often ask if I can suggest something to have their offspring read over the summer, in order to counteract this indoctrination.

This year the answer is a no-brainer. It is a book with the unwieldy title, “No matter what ... they’ll call this book Racist” by Harry Stein, a writer for what is arguably America’s best magazine, “City Journal.” In a little over 200 very readable pages, the author deftly devastates with facts the nonsense about race that dominates much of what is said in the media and in academia.

There is no subject on which lies and half-truths have become so much the norm on ivy-covered campuses than is the subject of race. Moreover, anyone who even questions these lies and half-truths is almost certain to be called a “racist,” especially in academic institutions which loudly proclaim a “diversity” that is confined to demographics, and all but forbidden when it comes to a diversity of ideas.

The ultimate irony is that many of those who publicly promote or accept the prevailing party line on race do not themselves accept it privately. A few years ago, when a faculty vote on affirmative action was proposed at the University of California at Berkeley, there was a fierce disagreement as to whether that vote should be taken by secret ballot or at an open faculty meeting.

Both sides understood that many professors would vote one way in secret and the opposite way in public. In short, hypocrisy is the norm in discussions of race — and not just at Berkeley. Moreover, it is the norm among blacks as well as whites.

Black civil rights attorneys and activists who denounce whites for objecting to the bussing of kids from the ghetto into their neighborhood schools have not hesitated to send their own children to private schools, instead of subjecting them to this kind of “diversity” in the public schools.

As for whites, author Harry Stein says that many white liberals “give blacks a pass on behaviors and attitudes they would regard as unacceptable and even abhorrent in their own kind.” This, of course, is no favor to those particular blacks — especially those among young ghetto blacks whose counterproductive behavior puts them on a path that leads nowhere but to welfare, at best, and behind bars or death in gangland street warfare at worst.

In the introduction to his book, Stein says that his purpose is “to talk honestly about race.” He accomplishes that purpose in a fact-filled book that should be a revelation, especially to young people of any race, who have been fed a party line in schools and colleges across America.

He looks behind the highly sanitized picture of Al Sharpton, as a civil rights statesman with his own MSNBC program and his designation as a White House adviser, to the factual reality of a man with a trail of slime that has included inciting mobs, in some cases costing innocent lives.

Positive news also receives its due. Some readers of this book may be surprised to learn that the ban on racial preferences in the University of California system did not lead to a disappearance of blacks from the system, as the supporters of affirmative action claimed would happen.

On the contrary, more blacks graduated from the system after the ban — for the very common sense reason that they were now admitted to University of California campuses where they qualified, rather than to places like UCLA and Berkeley, where they had often been admitted to fill a quota, and often failed.

Stein’s book is also one of the few places where many young people will see the actual words of people like Bill Cosby, Shelby Steele, Pat Moynihan and others who have opposed the fashionable platitudes that confuse racial issues.

Whether those words convince all readers is not the point. The point, especially for young readers in our schools and colleges, is that this may be one of the few times they will ever encounter a fundamentally different set of views on race — views that they have only heard referred to as coming from “Uncle Toms” or “racists.”

Cops, Witnesses Back Up Zimmerman's Version

http://abcnews.go.com/US/cops-witnesses-back-george-zimmermans-version/s...

Scattered showers of Journalism... Got to cover their backsides I guess...

"Two police reports written the night that George Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin said that Zimmerman had a bloody face and nose, according to police reports made public today.

The reports also note that two witness accounts appear to back up Zimmerman's version of what happened when they describe a man on his back with another person wearing a hoodie straddling him and throwing punches."

Calling all cars.. BOLO for Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson

They are reported missing in Sanford Florida.

What I do find interesting besides these two race baiters headed for parts unknown is that now ABC News is calling Zimmerman a Hispanic male.

This is probably why our two best known race pimps have gone missing..

"Zimmerman, 28, is a multi-racial Hispanic man who volunteered for the neighborhood watch committee who claimed that he shot Martin in self-defense after the 6-foot tall, 160 pound teenager knocked him to the ground, banged his head against the ground and went for Zimmerman's gun."

Can we say Tawana Brawley and Duke Lacrosse anyone?

“I feel for the white man who got beat up" “(do it for trayvon)"

"Chalk up another entry in the recent string of racially motivated assaults. Today’s story comes from Norfolk, Virginia, where a white couple were beaten savagely by a group of (according to reports) between 30 and 100 black youths. Apparently, the beating was so brutal that the couple could only manage to scream out the intersection at which they were located – “Church and Brambleton” – as the blows rained down:"

After reading your story I have several thoughts to express. I'm sorry that this had to happen to anybody. And I hope the thugs are caught and punished. But still if it had to happen maybe there is some sort of poetic justice that it happened to a couple of reporters. After all the environment that causes thugs like these to feel justified in attacking innocent people was created by the media. They need to learn that they have to live in this world that they are creating also. And to see that their own paper refused to carry the story should show these two that they are only pawns in a game being played by the larger media. I hate to think what might happen if Zimmerman is found not guilty. No amount of evidence or logic will pacify thugs like these.

Dude you are so correct....

Much like the OJ trial where a threat of riots and beat downs made the jury vote not guilty.. The Zimmerman trial will also guarantee a verdict not of not guilty but of guilty.. No matter the evidence to contrary.

They are not looking for Justice they want vengeance and nothing else will satisfy them.

Continued incidents like these will only make the situation worse. You have Louis Farakhan preaching hate and retribution and you have the New Black Panthers calling for killing Cracker babies and placing bounty's on people heads.

This will lead to no where good.

Race relations in this Country has taken at least three steps back...

Zimmerman Charge

Zimmerman may not go to trial because there's a good chance that a Judge will throw the case out.

Race - Riots

It's been twenty years since the riots in Los Angeles. For individuals and organizations like The New Black Panther Party and The Neo Nazis to predict that this horror will happen again is pathetic. I've experienced two riots in the Los Angeles area - 1965 and 1992. No one wants to go through that - great loss of life and property. The media has the DUTY of outlining what steps can be taken peacefully and judicially depending on the outcome of the Zimmerman case. Riots are the expression of hopelessness, ignorance and fear. . . and those who want to take advantage of a situation to STEAL. Regardless of what happens, bloggers in educated parts of our country should not participate in fueling the fire.

The media has a DUTY to report the facts accurately and fairly. And we know that hasn't always happened in this case. So I wouldn't look to the media to be of any assistance in keeping the peace. I'd expect the media to be more of an agitator than anything else.

DM - What?

" I'm looking into legal action one can take if they are unhappy with outcome of Zimmerman case."

What? Are you referring to the parents? or just anyone that may be unhappy?

The parents may have a civil case and likely do, just like the Goldman's won against OJ.

Others? I don't think so.

What did you find out about this? Inquiring minds want to know.

There are a number of groups in our country working diligently to ward off violence. It appears that someone has gotten to responsible media to print the FACTS and not fuel the fire of fear and hatred. The attorneys on both sides of the Martin/ Zimmerman case are going to use the facts and the law to benefit their clients. Groups are working with some who may be prone to react with violence. What is important is for all communities to counsel everyone towards non-violent action. Law enforcement will be prepared to deal with the criminal element throughout the country. (Not like LA in '92, when police presence was removed from the streets.) A group that I work with has been informed that the legal action that either side takes after a verdict has been rendered will be decided upon depending on the facts presented during the trial. So far, the facts that the press has released can be used by both sides as evidence . The reality is, unless there is a reliable eye witness, much evidence is considered unreliable. Those who value non-violence will just have to look for opportunities to quell and/or report any proposed violent reaction to a verdict.
