Should weapons be banned?

David Epps's picture

A terrible incident, which could have resulted in multiple murders, occurred a few days ago in Texas.

A 20-year-old man went on a rampage at a Texas community college and attacked and wounded at least 14 people. Several had to be life-flighted to an area hospital as the young man went from building to building seeking targets of opportunity.

What makes this attack stand out from similar attacks elsewhere is that the weapon the man brandished was not a firearm. It was a knife.

For centuries, a knife, or versions of it, was the deadliest weapon available to soldiers, mercenaries, bandits, mad men, and people with a grudge to settle.

At close quarters, a knife is as deadly as a gun and, in some cases, superior.

When I attended a Citizen’s Police Academy at Georgia’s Peachtree City Police Department some years ago, the firearms instructor demonstrated how an assailant wielding a knife could quickly close distance and inflict a fatal wound on a person holding a gun before that person, even if the person was a police officer, had a chance to react.

According to a news report, “A student who told police he’d fantasized for years about stabbing people to death was charged Tuesday with carrying out a building-to-building attack at a Texas community college that wounded at least 14 people, many of whom were stabbed in the face and neck, authorities said. The Harris County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement that 20-year-old Dylan Quick used a razor-type knife, and that he told investigators he’d been planning the attack at the suburban Houston campus for some time. Two people remained in critical condition late Tuesday.”

There are two things that seem to me to be obvious:

1. Even if a society were to rid itself of all firearms, the world would still be a deadly and dangerous place. Crazy people will still do crazy things.

If knives were outlawed, people would use clubs, or bricks, or sharpened pencils to commit their mayhem. Murders, domestic violence, assaults, robberies, and such would still occur. Mankind is, and always has been, extremely violent. There is no end in sight to that dilemma.

2. If someone at the Texas college had in his or her possession a defensive weapon, and the training and the will to use it, Dylan Quick’s rampage might have ended with minimal casualties.

Lawmakers could, I suppose, mount a campaign to ban all knives. But banning guns, knives, box cutters, spears, bows and arrows, sharpened sticks, rocks, and bricks, does not solve the problem.

Weapons are always available. They always have been and they always will be. The problem is found within the human heart, which, from the beginning of time, has been found to lean toward violence. Evil, unfortunately, always seems to find a way.

Good people must guard their own hearts. The propensity for violence and evil lurks somewhere in every person. Good people must also recognize the dangers that are ever-present and take steps to avoid it or, when it cannot be avoided, to defeat it.

The notion that, “if all weapons were banned, there would be no violence,” is folly.

What make all of these sad incidents stand out is that the perpetrators are not 'mentally' healthy. Mental health is nurtured in the home, community, (church) and in school. Is the home; community; church; school doing it's job in nurturing mortals in how to treat their neighbor as themselves? Hmmmmmm.

Your theory for the solution of this problem appears to be to accept violence and deal with it with violence. Wars continue. MLK and Ghandi achieved change through non-violence. It is the difficult road to take - but non-violence did achieve change.

I do not support banning weapons - but I do support those in position to change the human heart as Jesus and others have tried to do - to keep trying - through non-violence.

You mean non-violence like the Democrat endorsed "occupy" movement that also had backing of several terrorist groups?

Again, you prove the point. If you ever want to get someone who thinks differently from you to see your point on something and perhaps change their mind, you will have better success not using profanity Joe.

A "jagoff" is an American slang term originating from Pittsburgh English used to refer to a person who is unintelligent or hopeless. Since I am neither of those, I will toss that back at you.

Anytime you want to have a challenging, educational debate without the use of profanities and insults, I am glad to have it with you, Joe.

You have proven nothing. Let's get a few things straight, Jaggoff:
1. I am not your buddy
2. I am not here to make friends or engage in a discussion
3. I could not care any less than I do now as to what you or anyone else thinks of me.
4. You misspelled 'Jaggoff' and believe me, the definition is something much different than what you stated.

If you don't like what I am posting, then simply don't read it. You are free to do that - no one is forcing you to read anything that I post.
If it bothers you that much, don't get your panties in a wad or wet yourself, just DON'T READ IT.

You and STF should go to the gym and pump each other or something and work off some steam. Get over it already.

Jagoff or jag-off is an American derogatory slang term from Pittsburgh English meaning a person who is stupid or inept.[1] It is most prominent in the Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania areas.[2][3] The Dictionary of American Regional English defines the term as "general term of disparagement."[4] It is an archetypical Pittsburgh word, conjuring warm and nostalgic feelings among Pittsburgh expatriates.[5]

According to Barbara Johnstone, Professor of English and Linguistics at Carnegie Mellon University,[6] the term has its roots in the northern British Isles, an area that supplied many immigrants to Pittsburgh.[7] It is derived from the verb "to jag," which means "to prick or poke."[7] Johnstone said that "Nobody thinks of these derivatives of ‘jag' as obscene."[7]

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette sports journalist Dejan Kovacevic said "The true measure of any distinct language is its ability to create a word that no one else can match. And that, I always have found, is the beauty of the fairly harmless term "jagoff.""[8]

The Federal Government and Deadly Weapons in the USA

Guns should be administered. If I want to drive a car on US highways, I register it, I insure it and I qualify for a license to operate it.
Is owning a gun less serious than driving a car ? A car is simply a conveyance. A gun is a deadly weapon. Sure just like Arnold Schwartenagar in the terminator, there is a suite of options for 'home defense'
By citizens need to register the guns. Then manage them.
Then if for example the guns are stolen, they can be tracked back to the source. The trail of the gun as it changes hands tells a story, just like for stolen vehicles.
If there is a second amendment right to own a gun, it does not precluse intelligent managemnt of the deadly weapons in society.
Uncontroled proliferation of guns in society cannot stop any passed mass murder in American or any future mass muder in America.
Strict controls can.
Thin of the crap you went through the last time you went to Department of Drive Services to renew your Ga drivers license. Is owning a gun less serious or important. Then why would gun owner ship be held to at least that standard?

Statements, Arguments and other nonsense… Guns are evil..

Statement number 1: I have to register my car.. I have to have a license to drive it.
Argument: Well first that is true… IF.. you are going to drive that car on the public highways. If, you are not, then you neither have to register it nor have a license to drive it. So that’s a logical fallacy to start with… but… let’s at least take the Statement and make an argument out of it.

Anti-gun advocates love this “argument” it makes so much sense, well that is until you actually look at it logically.. If the “argument” was over should we register guns or who should have the ability to do so then a case may be made if they were arguing States Rights.

You see the Federal Government has no authority here. They cannot legally and Constitutionally use the power of Government to compel its citizens to perform an act that is under the purview of the States.

OK let me put it this way.. The Bill of Rights is a Charter of Negative Liberties it says what the Government CANNOT do to you… Oh btw- that was what our President said and you know what he was right… The Bill of Rights is there to prevent the Government from intruding on certain personal liberties.. Take the Freedom of Speech… Government is restricted from stopping speech. Is that an absolute.. no not even close. States pass laws all the time limiting speech. Inciting a Riot is one example.
So the Bill of Rights is there to restrict Government.. but one is more important then others.. the 10th.
It states: The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.

Here is where the “ I register my car” “I have to have a license to drive it” argument lies.. You see first the Federal Government does not register a car that is a States prerogative. Additionally the Federal Government does not License the person to drive it again that is under the States purview.
So the argument is not if the Federal Government may or may not use its power to force law abiding citizens to register their legal firearms.. the argument is rather the power is granted to the States to regulate firearms.

The answer may surprise you is… Yes. The State has the authority to regulate i.e. register Cars and may force you to register firearms.

Doing it will be the hard part. You see the Bill of Rights was constructed to restrict Government and make States responsible to its people. Should the Politicians of, say Georgia, decide to fashion a bill that requires the registration of firearms.. well then the citizens would either agree with their actions or not. Either way they are answerable to us. Where the Federal Government far removed the State politicians are not.

So Lion and C55 if you are going to make the argument of “I register my car” so register firearms.. then at least understand where the argument belongs… It belongs in the States not the Federal.

I suppose you would advocate background checks to buy pressure cookers?

Why stop with guns? Based on your premise we would manage everything that could potentially do us harm knives, baseball bats, pipes, matches....why the list is endless. The government can't manage itself, how can it manage to manage?

You're operating with a false premise, if someone wants to kill a lot of people they will try and some will succeed no matter how you want to "manage" it. At the very least we should allow the innocent to protect themselves.

Epps nonsense and guns

First Rev. Epps, no one is talking about banning guns. Why do gun worshipers continue to talk about a gun ban?

Second, anyone who equates the dangers posed by "gun violence" with "knife violence" and with "brick violence", etc. is talking such nonsense one does not know where to begin to reply.

Third, today the gun bullies prevailed in the U.S. Senate to block expanded background checks on gun purchases. Criminals and the mentally will continue to have an easier path to buy guns. More Americans will die. The gun bullies manipulated the strange rules of the U.S. Senate so that a minority can demand a 60% vote to defeat a policy that nearly 90% of Americans and a majority of Senators approve. So much for that wonderful American democracy that the Tea Party folks worship.

Lion, they'll also be able...

...to buy pressure cookers! You will NOT be able to stop those - mentally ill or otherwise - who wish to inflict harm on others for their own rationalized, or psychotic, reason. They have the Internet; they WILL find a way to do it. So sorry, but welcome to the reality that is our world (NOTE I did not say 'country', because it happens EVERYWHERE). As for your '90%' claim, to counter I've read a poll that said of all of our national concerns, gun control was only the #1 concern of 4% of the polled population.

Btw, the Bible predicts that in the end of days that Man will turn unto themselves to commit their own acts; but then again, who reads that old rag anymore..."This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, deproud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, dispisers of those that are good, traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God. (2 Timothy 3:1-2)

But, maybe we've been that way all along...in many passages Godlessness is our future. So, good luck.

If mothers, teachers, and those who care about the growth (physical and mental) health of our children had meaningful mental health care available to the children of our country - without criminalizing them, - then maybe we wouldn't have these unstable adults amongst us! The remedy for 'hate' has been found in the writings of great philosophers throughout written history. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you

To believers - God is and always will be present as manifested in Life, Truth, Love, Principle, Soul, Sprit, Mind. To non-believers, the words of the Golden Rule suffice. There is truth and error in the Bible. We learn far more from Truth. Using the error found is insuring suffering. . .and not much hope in overcoming it.

The power is in the vote - and hate/ignorance is not power.

Joe, I've not met...

...anyone who has not received mental health care that they needed, although I'm sure they do exist, like any other healthcare issue. Of course, they would need to SEEK the care. I don't believe anyone is 'criminalizing' these people (maybe some 'demonize' them), unless of course they are commiting CRIMES! I'm uncertain what is meant by 'meaningful' mental health care. As a FATHER, I ensured my children received good health care, mental and/or otherwise; I believe that is my RESPONSIBILITY. As single-parent families increase, I'm sure we'll see more and more reliance on the Gov't to help them out; that must be what DM is getting at.

One vein of counseling help & treatment comes from - as DM mentioned - our God & the shepards that are our clergy. But the Left is bent on destroying religion in America so that avenue will soon be closed as an option.

Joe, please enlighten us. How will we the people pay for those services that we so enjoy in this country? With private business having to raise prices in order to make a well deserved profit - how will 'government' pay for these services without taxing (charging) the recipients of the services of the private businesses that are supplying the services? Most insurance companies are privately owned - not government owned. Most transportation companies are privately owned, not government owned., etc., etc., etc. We fly, travel using transportation owned by private companies/stockholders; our farmers are subsidized by the government (our tax dollars) in order for them to see a 'profit'; etc., etc., etc. Have you submitted a plan to improve the monitoring and regulating of the current expenditures that are controlled by our elected leaders in Congress? What has been their response to your plan? Thanks

The Narcissist In Chief throws a temper tantrum

Make no mistake. obama's goal was not to curb gun violence, but to be able to put another notch in his gunstock (pardon the pun)
Yep. This was all about obama. He doesn't care about the victims of Sandy Hook, he only cares about a hollow political victory.
He threw a temper tantrum on live television today because he lost a battle. Spoiled little children like barry don't like to lose.
They throw tantrums. That's what he did today.

He did nothing to further tha cause. He only drove the country further apart. (That's one thing he is good at - partisanship and division.)

2) No, I meant Obama. The same person that immediately preceding comments in this very thread were referring to - BY NAME. Confusing, huh?

Founding Fathers rolling over in their graves

Listen closely and you will hear the Founding Fathers of our nation rolling over in their graves. The Constitution of our great country created the Senate to be a deliberative body not beholden to the immediate politics of the day. They were to reason with each other and discuss and debate all issues important to the nation. That's why they were given 6 year terms.

If James Madison were here today, he would surely follow Jesus' example and cleanse the temple of these Democrat and Republican pharisees who have turned the Senate into a den of thieves, refusing even to debate important issues.

I'm sick of both parties, and today was a low light in American history.

Yes indeed, STF, he certainly would cleanse the Senate. First by getting rid of the career Senators and the corrupt ones, secondly by getting the State governments to appoint Senators - 2 from each state and then debating the gun bill and background checks. After a spirited discussion, they would vote 90-10 to not tinker with the Second Amendment. Later they would take on gay marriage and abortion. I suspect if our Senators were appointed by the State Legislature as God and Madison intended, Georgia would still have Max Cleland and most likely Johnny Isakson. Works for me.

Red State Fear. Sad. Leadership paid for (so they thought) More than 40% will vote in 2014. . . and some purple states will go Blue. Now don't go with the 'entitlement crowd' paid for - who has more 'power' NAACP or NRA? Are your farmers ready to give up their ''subsidies'? Complex issues - but the power of the vote will win.

Lion don't go away mad...

First.. you are wrong. All you have to do is a little home work and do a search for Democrats talk of gun bans and viola you find Feinstein, Waters, Hoyer and others all talking about banning guns... Then you get to the States like Connecticut and Colorado both banning guns..so...

Second.. Anyone equating gun violence with the tool used instead of the individual using it as being at fault is talking such nonsense one does not know where to begin to reply.

Third.. Yes a new law covering a already existing law was defeated. SO what.. It did nothing and would have stopped NO ONE. Oh and btw-we don't govern based on polls there Lion that would be a Social Democracy and not the Republic that we are. But strangely I can't find that poll you state so.......

Tell us Lion how this bill if it became law would have prevented any of the mass shootings in the past 20 years...

I await your response in breathless anticipation..

Pastor Epp's - Folly?

Folly?

Why don't you know all you have to do is pass laws and put in regulations and most of our problems with guns will be solved?

Don't you see the logic in this? Stop all this talk about the nature of mankind, it's not the point, by regulating those that will obey the laws we are controlling all those that won't. Don't you see?

PTCO.. we have a Drug Free Nation..Don't we?

I mean after Billions of dollars spent and Law after Law after Law against them and Regulations out the wazoo surely we are a Drug Free Nation right?

I mean C55 alluded to Car's being registered, so that will fix it right? Drunk Driving is regulated we don't have any problems with that at all right?

If your house is shoddily built it's the hammers fault not the Carpenter...just go ahead and pay the man but make him register his hammer as a repeat offender or something...

Federal Adminstration of Deadly Weapons

Saying the guns are OK because of a knife attack is stupid.

If I want to drive a car on America's highways, I need to register the car, get a license to drive it and carry liability insurance on it. Why ? Driving a car is a serious thing.

If there is asecond amendment right to own guns, is that less serious ? a gun is a deadly weapon. How do I know ? "Possession of a deadly weapon in the commision of a felony", Guns are on the list.
Guns got a buy t othis point because of some old romantic antiquated ideas.

But the choice comes down to this: Do I protect gun rights versus the right of the people to life liberty and the pursuit of happiness, or Do I provide for a safe society and properly adminster the right to own guns - an no one feels safeanywhere?

On Sunday, Senator Cornyn from Texas said, the pending gun law will nto work. He is right. It is too laxed. Half measures are doomed for failure and only play to NRA propganda. The people see through it. now it is time for the politicians to catch up.

If onthe one hand you say I have a right to own a gun because the constitution, but I will not register it because the government cannot be trusted, that is a fools folly. If the government is not legitimate, then neither is the right. Can't have it both ways.
If you are fearful about registering you gun, is it because in the light of day you shouldn't be able to own one ?
The days of the wild west are long gone. Time for some clear headed thinking about a proper role for deadly weapons in society.

Constitutionally speaking, you have a right to bear arms but not so when owning an automobile. You see there is no requirement for insurance, registration, or whatever when the automobile is used exclusively on one's private property. Further the right of self defense or to protect family or property is not antiquated nor romantic, but is merely self preservation.
I own guns for both protection and sport, but until recently hadn't given much thought of mistrusting government. History's examples of a populace trusting government while unarmed is causing me to re-look my priority concerning sport.

C55 one question...

... do you have a Constitutionally guaranteed right to drive a car?

"IF" there is a 2nd Amendment??? Dude you should really read something besides the Funny Pages.

What part of SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED" don't you get? The Federal Government has no authority to force registration of weapons... PERIOD.

nuke.. Jesus didn't need one did he?

So don't carry.. No one is trying to force you to either.

btw,...I do seem to remember that his apostles were carrying swords to guard him during his trials in the Garden of Gethsemane.. "Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear." John 18:10

So if it is good enough for Jesus apostles it's good enough for me...

The Sword was the most lethal weapon in their time so......

But then again even Jesus said this: " "But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don't have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one." Luke 22:36
