Crazy is as crazy lives...

Ronda Rich's picture

In my life, I’ve done some crazy things, things that defy reason and in retrospect lead even me to say, “What was I thinking?”

There was that Sunday morning drive I once took with legendary race car driver Dale Earnhardt. I thought we were going for a simple spin around Daytona International Speedway, just to see how the steep embankment felt. But the mischievous Earnhardt had other ideas.

We climbed into the pace car and he took off like he was on the final lap of the Daytona 500, trying to pass Jeff Gordon for the win. Earnhardt was never one for holding back. Read More»

Rep. Ramsey reports: Legislative session passes halfway point

Matt Ramsey's picture

Last Monday, Feb. 28, marked the 20th legislative day, and halfway point, of the Georgia General Assembly’s 2011 legislative session.

While we have already succeeded in passing legislation improving our early voting system, and amending our Fiscal Year 2011 state budget, there is still much left to do before we reach legislative day 40 and adjourn sine die. That was clear over the past two weeks, as the House passed multiple pieces of legislation addressing some of the most important issues facing our state. Read More»

Storm warning for Fayette’s taxpayers

Dennis Chase's picture

Another issue has come up that concerns me. A concern that, it follows the direction that it has started will have an impact on a lot of folks in Fayette County.

The county is moving toward more intensive management of stormwater needs for areas outside the city limits of Fayetteville and Peachtree City. Those two cities already have management plans for stormwater. The first step was taken in December 2009, and the proposal, at least at this point, is going to cost us more money. Read More»

Spring Training

Justin Kollmeyer's picture

I write today about Spring Training. But, no, not the baseball kind. The Spiritual kind. Yes, we do actually need a good Spring Training for our spiritual lives, just as the baseball players need a good Spring Training to learn the game all over again and get themselves ready for another long and successful season. We need a good Spiritual Spring Training to get ourselves ready again for a long and successful Spiritual experience in this life and our life for eternity. Read More»

'Beastly': The name says it all

Kevin Thomas's picture

I recently saw a new film with a quite self-explanatory name: “Beastly.” The actors are fine and the source material (the story of “Beauty and the Beast”) is solid, but the film itself is too unbelievable. This is one of those films where you wish it would have been on the Lifetime channel, where they somehow thrive on making movies like this. Read More»

The summer of '99

Sallie Satterthwaite's picture

The Summer of ’99 will go down in our personal history as one of the best we’ve had together.

We didn’t travel to speak of. Didn’t do much boating. The weather was not especially pleasant.

But this was the Summer of the Boat. This was the summer we refurbished, added to and made a 25-foot Nimble Nomad our own.

Two previous owners had loaded her with toys that would have taken us years to add. Life jackets for more people than the boat would comfortably carry. Electronics Dave had only dreamed of. Pots and pans, plates and tableware – even a tinkly little set of wind chimes. Read More»

What day is it?

Rick Ryckeley's picture

I’ll be the first to admit it’s been a long time since I’ve known what day of the week it was. And for once, the guys at the fire department won’t laugh at me because of a story. If they’re honest, they’ll admit that they lose track of days as often as I do.

Now being confused isn’t a new state for me; just ask some of the guys I work with, but this time my befuddlement has nothing to do with getting older. It has to do with every day being Friday. Confused? Well, welcome to my world. Read More»

Warriors and heroes

David Epps's picture

On Feb. 13, 1970, I arrived for Recruit Training (now called “Basic Warrior Training”) at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C., and was assigned to 2nd Battalion, Platoon 223.

My father warned me that it would be tough. I had no idea just how tough. I had played football in junior high and high school for five years and for one season after high school. I lifted weights and had been taking karate lessons for about four years. I thought I was prepared. I was not. Read More»

President becomes chief judge, nullifies law

Cal Thomas's picture

President Obama has said his view of same-sex “marriage” is “evolving.” Apparently he thinks that the law should be based on a kind of Darwinian jurisprudence which allows it to “evolve” and become whatever the ruling politicians at a given moment say it is (or isn’t). Read More»
