How close will you come?

Justin Kollmeyer's picture

I’ve always said that someday I’m going to design a church to fit the natural instincts of most people. The main element will be pews on a conveyor belt. When people walk into the church, there will be only one pew available — in the back, of course — just where everybody wants to sit! Then, when the back pew fills up, the whole pew would move to the front on a conveyor belt, and a new empty pew would pop up in the back for the next group of people and so on. Read More»

The debt storm threatens America’s future

Steve Brown's picture

Someone hands you a photo of a horrific car crash, broken glass everywhere, steel frames in twisted little balls. The person then tells you this is your car several years down the road and your entire family was in it. Studying the picture more intently, you realize it is your car right down to the bumper stickers and the license plate. Read More»

Numbed by Mammon, Part 2

Ben Nelms's picture

Historian Will Durant once said, “Caesar hoped to reform men by changing laws and institutions; Christ wished to remake institutions and lessen laws by changing men.”

Who is Caesar? Does he not live today, and in every day? Or are we to believe that the spirit of anti-Christ has vanished? Do you really believe that some of the authorities and powers and world rulers of the darkness that exist all live in nations other than the U.S.? And with us being the most powerful nation in the world? Read More»

Legislative update: Cross-state health insurance bill advances

Matt Ramsey's picture

Last week the House convened for legislative days 28 through 30. As I have previously mentioned, Day 30 of the legislative session is referred to as “Cross-Over Day,” as it is the final day of the session that a bill can move out of the House or Senate and still be considered by the other body before the end of the session on Day 40.

It is always a long and late day with dozens of bills being considered on the floor of the House, and this year was no different. Read More»

Southern men & new clothes for Easter

Years ago, before fuel conservation became popular and trendy, I was a forerunner to saving gas by combining errands. When I go into town, I spend several hours doing errands that I have been waiting to do. It saves both gas and time.

One of those combination trips always includes the beauty shop and having my car serviced simultaneously. The other day, I stopped in to Harrison’s where those folks who have become good friends, take good care of both me and my car.

“Can I get a ride to the beauty shop?” I asked Roger, while several other customers milled around. Read More»

Wool-gathering at the wheel: As dangerous as DUI

Sallie Satterthwaite's picture

This column keeps surfacing from somewhere deep in my online documents while I’m looking for something else, but it’s old. I can tell by the updating I’m doing that at least most of it was written quite some time ago. The content suggests that I was holding forth on communicating while driving. And that was before “texting” was even a real term. Read More»

I never saw it coming

David Epps's picture

“Hey, Dave, would you be willing to help test my first group of students?” The request came in the early 1980s from a fellow karate instructor who was teaching his first class. I was about 30 and he a few years younger. I had been involved with martial arts since I was 15 years old and had my own class. Actually, I had taught karate at one place or another since I was 20, so, for a young man, I was relatively experienced. Read More»

Head voice

The problem with most relationships is that men don’t use their brains before they speak. Some women will say most men don’t use their brains at all. I’m afraid I can’t argue with that; besides, that would mean I would have used my brain.

Recent studies have shown that women, on the other hand, not only use their brains, but they actually use both sides of their brains.

Guys, let’s face it — this puts all of us at a great disadvantage. So how can we tip the scales back in our favor, you might ask? That’s where I come in – I’ve made a list. Read More»
