Gun and knife show being considered for Kedron Fieldhouse

The City’s Recreation Department and Leisure Services Commission is considering the possibility of renting the Kedron Fieldhouse and Aquatic Center Complex for a weekend gun and knife show early next year. This would include the fieldhouse, pools, rink and all parking.

A company that sponsors these shows throughout Georgia approached the city with a proposal to have a show at Kedron. The company would rent the facility for the weekend at a cost of about $3,600. City staff said they would close the entire Kedron complex to other events in order to ensure ample parking and avoid conflicting events.

Similar shows have been held elsewhere in the state at government facilities. City staff attended a recent show in nearby Carroll County and reported that it ran smoothly and was well attended.

“We recognize that this would be a new and unique use of the Kedron facility,” said Randy Gaddo, Director of Leisure Services. “In these challenging economic times, we have been encouraged to find new ways of generating revenue and $3,600 would be more than we could ever generate through our routine uses of the facility during that time period. We feel we have an obligation to give this serious consideration.”

The show could bring in more than 100 vendors from across the nation who attend these shows as part of their marketing and sales efforts. “These vendor teams would stay at our hotels, eat at our restaurants and shop at local stores, so this has a wider economic impact on the community as well,” said Gaddo.

The event would be planned out months in advance to minimize the impact on activities normally held at the facilities.

The company would set up the show on Friday and be opened on Saturday and part of the day Sunday as well. There is normally a nominal entrance fee that allows access to all activities.

City police staff queried other metro Atlanta police departments where similar shows were held to determine if there had been any problems. All reports were favorable, citing good security and safety procedures. The City Attorney verified that, after a review of state law, he found no statute to prohibit the event being held at Kedron.

A final decision will be made soon on the matter. For more information call the Recreation Department at 770-631-2542.

I suspect Arnstadt has grown a little. Remember, It was in the old East German spree of influence back in the day.

Rolls Royce and Lufthansa built
an engine overhaul and test facility recently. Be home by Friday.

What would other police departments...

....know about whether youngsters would be influenced to shoot someone, or whether mentally ill people would see a way to get attention----nothing?

Anyway, what policeman would say guns are bad? He makes his living carrying at least one and other objects of harm!
That is like asking a combat soldier if he could get by without a gun!

Sounds Good

This would save me some gas. 2nd amendment Legal gun ownership is a great crime deterrent. http://www.nraila.org/Issues/FactSheets/Read.aspx?id=206&issue=007 I would even vote for a law like Kennesaw's http://www.wnd.com/?pageId=41196 We might hear "Hey Baby is that a banana in your pocket or are you just proud believer in the 2nd amendment?" Or "Outlaw guns and only outlaws will have guns"? -GP

Well duh!!! Do we really think those criminals will come to gun show to rob someone? Gee if a bad guy goes to a booth to do that, I would suspect he would quickly be "painted" with a bunch of little glowing dot thingys.

Well Gym,

No, not MSP but rather Arnstadt, Germany. I'm Frankfurt and in a couple of hours I'll be on the train to the job. The train ride covers almost the same route that the 3rd Army took back in WWII. Patton's run!!!

Hey Cy

I first flew into Rhein-Main USAFB in Mar 1960! Seeing as it closed in 2005, guess most of the bldgs have been razed and new stuff built. Arnstadt huh. Don't think there's much there except a Foundry for Rail Brakes! You know I have lived in Germany 15 yrs altogether! When you coming home?

Well now, that brings back unpleasant memories of the 21st Replacement Battalion! :D

"Where do you want to be permanently stationed in Germany, soldier?"

"I like warm weather....have any openings in southern Germany?"

"sure do! here you go, Munich! Very far south!"

...of course, they didn't mention it was less than an hour away from the Alps...

If we need $3000 that badly (less the clean-up afterward), I have some other suggestions:

Fake and costume jewelry sale direct from China and Bangladesh
(I have already seen these at Piedmont and the Sams building)

Traveling Flea and acrobat show---starring Soupy Sales

Loretta Lynn and "DOO" sanging and signin!
(DOO dead, but someone who looks lak hem)

Cuban liquors and fine wine by the gallon or box--cane base.

Alabama Apple Butter, Chitlins, grits waffles--candied, other goods.

Wisconsin Cheese samples--out of date but cheep! Crackers too).

Belts, braces, bands, brackets, booster-cables, and dried bats & Co.

Handbags, stuffed horses, pocketbooks, lamps, paintings, & mystery boxes.

Come one, come all......$2.00 entrance fee....$10 exit fee by the giant Egress!

Gun & knife "show"?

Maybe so spy, but so do malls, shopping centers, flea markets and all the regular places set up to sell stuff.

What exactly about this event makes it a "show" anyway? Sounds like they just want to turn the fieldhouse into retail space for a weekend..let's call it what it is, a traveling weapons store.

Let's Just

book every facility months and years in advance. Anybody who wants it, come rent it. Sign the contracts, PTC. Put us in a legal bind so deep that if we need to close any of these facilities due to lack of budget money or maintenance issues vs passing on tax increases to keep them open, it would cost the city thousands to get out of these rental agreements. So, you pass on the tax increase instead. Keeps city staff in a job and keeps the facilities open and running at ANY cost to the taxpayers.

What out clause will the city have in these agreements that protect the city from being sued or have to pay damages if the city has to close the facilities down due to lack of money before these events take place? How far in the red does the Leisures Services Div. have to go before we start cutting services and closing facilities? Look at the Oct. 2010 income vs projected budget figures. How long do Erika, Kim and Vanessa say we will keep these facilities open at any cost?

Boy, the city is damned if they do and damned if they don't.

The article said early next year---it is now December of this year--early next year--Jan, Feb, March, April, May---don't think the city is going broke by then, or are going to close the facility without previous notice. At least they are looking at ways to make the venues pay for themselves. I am not a gun lover but I guess people will also be coming out of the woodwork protesting having a gun show here.
