Selective Designs urges customers to take advantage of tax credit

If you’re planning a window or door replacement project, then now’s the time. If you do it now you can receive a tax credit for 30 percent of the cost of qualified energy-efficient windows and doors, up to $1,500 for this year. We also offer a five year labor warranty and lifetime window warranty on these windows.
Before this the credit was originally only $200 for windows and up to $500 for doors. Congress and the President have passed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, aka “The Stimulus.”
To qualify for the new tax credit, you have to buy the most energy-efficient windows. Energy Star certification, isn’t the best any longer. The better windows save you money on energy bills and keep you comfortable all year round. Only windows and doors with a U-Factor of .30 or less qualify. (U-Factor is a measure of the window’s overall energy-efficiency.) if you purchase windows with a U-factor of .31 or .32. you will not qualify for the credit.
Windows and doors also need a Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) of .30 or less. A low SHGC blocks the blistering heat that comes through windows in the summer, reducing the load on your air conditioning.
In order to receive this credit you must purchase before December 31, 2010! You also need to save your window and/or door label also called the NFRC label to file with your taxes. You will claim this on your federal filing for the 2009 tax year. That is like using a $1,500.00 coupon.
• The tax credit is for the cost of the product only and does not include installation costs. Be sure to ask for a sales receipt that shows the cost of the product only.
• The tax credit is 30% of the amount paid up to a $1,500 maximum.
• If a combination of windows and doors are purchased, the total maximum credit is $1,500.
• This is a new tax credit for 2009/2010.

Private Maintenance of Bees - County says NO!

Fayette County,GA has an AR zoning code for agriculture and livestock use. It requires five acres upon which this kind of activity can be performed. Yet, it mentions nothing about the maintenance of a bee hive or bee hives. The County zoning department is "interpreting" beekeeping as an "agricultural, livestock" endeavor thus denying private citizens living in an R40, one acre plus community the priviledge of maintaing a bee hive for the purpose of polinating their gardens and those of their neighbors. I wonder if they would consider mosquitoes "livestock?" They are insect just the same as the honey bee! In spite of the Georgia Code 2-14-41.1 that restricts municipal and county governments from making ANY laws or allowing such laws "to continue" restricting the keeping of bees, the County holds they have authority to outlaw bee hives in their zoning regulations notwithstanding the fact the endeavor is never mentioned ANYWHERE in the local code. In my view, this is too broad an interpretation and invites assumptive reasoning and personal bias to enter into the issue of whether or not beekeeping for private use should be forbidden.

In light of the mounds of scientific evidence documenting the declining bee population across our country, local authorities such as Fayette County should be held to stricter codes. If the County wishes to restrict bee hives the codes should clearly state that maintaining a hive of bees in an R40 zone is "illegal" or conversely, AR zoning "includes the raising of bees" for private or commercial use.

Either way, restricting beekeeping in the current environment of a declining bee population is not in the best interest of our society as a whole. Documented evidence shows that bees are responsible for 75% of our food production! Fayette County and local citizens need to come to grips with this fact.

C'mon Bo, tell us that you actually know someone who who lives on R-40 Zoned property who has been denied permission to maintain a bee hive. Jeez, makes me wonder if I could get in trouble for harboring a Hummingbird community or operating an established food bank for hundreds of my feathered friends. But I'd like to hear or see something official about that.
