Coweta man arrested for incest, rape of relative visiting F’ville

Twenty-five year-old David Travis Dennis is escorted into Fayetteville Police headquarters late Thursday by Det. Mike Whitlow and Det. Scott Israel (rear) on charges of incest and rape of a 17 year-old relative visiting Fayetteville.

Fayetteville Police arrested 25 year-old Coweta County resident David Travis Dennis late Thursday afternoon on charges of rape and incest pertaining to a 17 year-old relative who was visiting Fayetteville to attend a party to celebrate Dennis’ release from prison just one day prior to the crime.

Det. Mike Whitlow said the incident was initially reported on July 1 when a female relative of Dennis went to Piedmont-Fayette Hospital to report she had been raped.

Hospital staff called 911 to report the incident and police responded to the hospital, Whitlow said. A Fayetteville detective was summoned and interviewed the female who identified Dennis as the suspect, Whitlow added. The female stated the incident occurred after a party for Dennis who had just been released from prison.

Information obtained through the Georgia Dept. of Corrections showed that Dennis had been released from Walker State Prison on June 30, having served nearly 13 months after being convicted on charges from Clayton County in 2008 related to a drug law violation, criminal trespass and 2nd degree criminal damage.

The following day, July 1, a party was held for Dennis at a restaurant in Fayetteville to celebrate his release from prison, Whitlow said. Some of those attending the party subsequently went to a residence in Fayetteville where the incident occurred, Whitlow said. At one point during the night Dennis entered a bedroom and forcibly raped his 17 year-old relative, said Whitlow.

Whitlow said that after the report the investigation was then turned over to Det. Lt. Debbie Chambers and evidence obtained from the victim was sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) for processing. On November 3, Det. Chambers received information from the GBI that the DNA obtained from evidence and the suspect’s DNA were a match.

Dennis was arrested Thursday by Coweta County law enforcement at his parole office in Coweta based on the warrant taken by Fayetteville Police.

Dennis was subsequently picked up by Fayetteville detectives.

Whitlow said Dennis also had a prior arrest in Fayette County.

Whitlow commended the victim for the assistance she provided, along with the help provided by the staff at Piedmont Fayette Hospital, “Who did a great job in handling this delicate situation.”

GBI & Budget Cuts

You waited for DNA test but everyone that is processed thru the jail (I am guessing all GA county jails) can be held for 72 hrs. No one can be released on bail until the GBI confirms their fingerprints are not want & warrant in some other USA jurisdiction. Guess what? Especially on a weekend, everyone sits in the jail on the public's dime for 72 hours. At least accused murderers & rapist are getting equal delay as the misdemeanors.

i was getting ready to say

i was getting ready to say the same thing. His mother use to watch you, myself and my little brother when we were growing and everyday when we got there there was something else going on. One day his mother would have both eyes blacked, arm in a splint, hole in the wall where a phone was thrown at her and she couldn't even take him to krate without having big glasses on because both of her eyes were black. Why would a mother let her 3 kids from the ages of 7-1 1/2 let them see that go on. ya'll think that people just turn out this way? don't think so EVERYTHING starts at home. my mom took my brother and I out of her i guess you could call "care". I even seen her chase Travis around the house with a belt just because his button on his jeans wouldn't button. His mother may have that motherly love for him and not once did i ever see except for maybe the krate classes... the arm break thing wasn't just travis i have talked to other people besides just trav bout that and all the stories and facts did not change, and it wasn't just from friends family members also, his mother had a helping hand in it also. parents like to think that their child developed problems on their own but love to tell ya its not true. how would you turn out if you saw your mother get beat on on the time? why would you even let your kids be in that situation? Once you have kids not sure if many of you know but its not about you anymore its about your child(ren) and their safety of not seeing things like that. HAVE A GREAT DAY

Learn what your writing

Learn what your writing about, then type.

You can be held 72 hours before being charged. Most people are charged at the time of the offense. Some have to wait for warrants to be typed and signed. I doubt it usually takes longer than 24 hours.

Finger prints are run through a database in most places. People are only held for prints if they cannot be identified. And by the way not everyones fingerprints are at the GBI or FBI. You have to have given them for a job or been arrested before.

The police don't need to wait for fingerprints to tell them that someone is wanted. A computer ststem run by the FBI will do that. No waiting. Officer types your name in and they'll find out in seconds if your wanted.

A lot of offenses are bondable, meaning you post bond after your get "booked". You don't have to wait to see a judge or a warrant.

Learning

Glad to know my personal experience was a dream. Sometime earlier in the year I went to bail someone out (not that it matters but it is against the law in the Land of the Free to not give the PTCPD your name while out walking. Even if they already know your name). I was told on a Friday night by the PD that it would be a couple of hours to process. Well, no it was the full 72 hrs, Sunday. The nice people told me at the jail it was because of the fingerprints & the GBI. Could they be lying & they just want to hang onto the marginally criminal?

makes me sick

i had my own DNA taken in Feb this year and it didnt come back from the GBI until almost SEPT!! So for everyone thinking it sounds fishy because it took so long to come back, you dont know what your talking about. Most crimes have DNA that is taken in some form and sent off. The GBI is so backed up that if it takes almost seven months to get a BAC back, a rape test is probably alot more complicated than seeing how much alcohol was in your blood. I am just thankful that it finally came back no matter how long it took. The POLICE are doing their jobs and they are the ones that dont need to be slammed in this, not travis. I have a good feeling who most of yall are that are trying to defend him and it doesnt suprise me.. you hang around trash.. you begin to start smelling!! Thats all he does is lie to people and if he never hurt you in any kind of way or stole anything from you.. all that means is he never got the chance.. not that he wouldnt have done it!!!!!!!!!!!! GROW UP ... OPEN YOUR EYES ... UNTIL THEN .. DO US ALL A FAVOR AND SHUT UP!! keep your keyboard courage to yourself.. no one likes an internet gangster!

just sick!!

all of yall who are defending this loser need to get a reality check.. what if it was your daughter?????? im not stating facts about someone i know nothing about im stating them about the loser i was unfortunate enough to meet! he is a discrace to everyone he comes in contact with and if he has brain washed you to make you think he is a good person .. i feel sorry for you. he gets what he gets cause he deserves it not becasue his momma didnt love him. thats bull! and u know it !! i would believe the victim over him if she said the sky was neon green and the grass was blue!! he is a liar, a cheater, a loser, a thief, A HORRIBLE FRIEND! and if there were any more mud holes i would drag his name right through them. so you might as well move on from his loser like antics because the next time you see your so called friend it will be through six inches of glass .. hopefully you will not put any money on his books cause the last thing his fat ass needs is a honey bun!! so you HAVE A GREAT DAY !! i know i will knowing this loser is where he belongs ! GOD BLESS THE VICTIM!!

There are 2 sides to every story and then the truth in the middle even the Police will tell you that and to every body slaming Travis's name has no business doing it specially if you don't even know the story all yall are drama starters and you REALLY dont know the story. I have NO, none whatsoever, any sympathy for the victim or her mother. The one that has MY prayers, and this is coming from a rape victim, is Travis. Just remember that when your judgement day comes before GOD, Karma is a B*TCH and HELL himself is going to be waiting on you. I think the ONLY reason that the "victim" said anything was to get attention and approval from her mother who in the first place does not like Travis from previous conversations with many people outside of Travis. Even his own brother said so to me and few many other people. SO, having said my part all you haters can go to hell along with the what you call "victim". Ya'll spoke your freedom of speech regarding your thoughts and opinions and so am I. Gotta love the 1st Admendment, so dont be hating on me.

There are two sides

To start this comment, there are alot of things you do not understand. First..you should have never put his real name out there. second..his con artist ways certainly worked on you. He is very good at that.

Let me explain: His mother has loved him since the day he was concieved. And still loves the little boy she gave birth to, but cannot understand the man he has become. It is not or ever been an issue of the mom loving him, it is an issue of the mom being scared to death of her own son. example: Travis broke his mother's arm in 3 places 5 years ago. She has reason to stay away from him.

As far as the victum: NO female would ever want to go through a rape kit just for attention. That is just sick on your part. The victum trusted and was thrilled about Travis' return.

As far as God and karma....you need to read your bible.

God Bless and I will pray for you.

He has affected every family member. It has been a horrible rollercoaster of emotions. Ending him did cross a few people's mind, but in the end...the victum needed us more to help her get through this terrible time. The family thanks you for your support.

Coweta man arrested for incest, rape of relative visiting F’vill

Glad they finally got off their butts to get the man in handcuffs. So this crime was reported and evidence was collectd in July, yet it took till Nov 3rd to get this clown in handcuffs?

DNA evidence doesn't take months 4 months to get results. Even the GBI isn't that slow, when was the evidence sent to the crime lab?

This smells....

Did you go to Crime Analysis College???? Did not think so.

Due to our wonderful president, the economy and the spree of crime....Georgia was forced to close down many crime labs..so..it takes longer for officials to recieve evidence back. Not to mention....They were related--DNA has to be matched and cross referenced.

Whatever Labs that were closed (I only find one-in Moultrie), it was due to a State budget crunch, not related to any Fed action.ew bonds are about to be issued to renovate & re-open the one in Moultrie.

Think about how many false accusations have been filed in past history. Yes, they knew she was raped but would if she didn't want to tell them who really raped her. Would if she just threw his name out there.

I know this girl personally and this was a relative of hers she trusted and that she was close to. I was one of the first people she told when it happened and she was scared to death to go to the police, finally with the help of my son and his friends we convinced her of the right thing to do. I talk with her almost everyday and she is doing the best she can to stay strong. The negative comments do not help the victims!

the girl did not want to tell them who raped her. The article said she reported it to the detective. I think that is reason enough for an arrest. My point is that there was TOO much time between the report and the arrest. What is the excuse?

Interesting Journalistic Ethics Dilemma here

You've got someone arrested for a sex crime with a relative, and you identified the alleged assailant by name. Wouldn't that essentially identify the victim to anyone who knows the guy, particularly since listing the age of the victim makes it very clear it's either a sister or cousin? Why not go "all in" and list her address and high school as well?

In any event, it's a shame it takes 4 months to get DNA test results back from the state.
