Rep. Lewis: ‘Need NAACP now more than at any time’

Receiving honors at the Fayette County NAACP Freedom Fund Banquet held Oct. 29 at the Wyndham in Peachtree City were (L-R) Fayette County School System Deputy Superintendent Fred Oliver; Omega Psi Phi President Tommy Ambrose; Congressman John Lewis; Julia H. Wrightt; Wayne Kendall; and Fayette County High School student Nicholas Britt. Photo/Ben Nelms.

The house was packed Oct. 29 at the Wyndham Peachtree Hotel and Conference Center as the Fayette County Branch of the NAACP held its 14th Annual Freedom Fund Banquet. Front and center for the occasion was keynote speaker Congressman John Lewis.

This year’s banquet theme was “Standing on the Legacy of our Past, Forging an Understanding for the Future.”

Fayette NAACP Branch President John Jones said Lewis is dedicated to the highest ethical standards and moral principles which have won him the admiration of many of his colleagues on both sides of the aisle in the United States Congress.

Lewis in his remarks drew from some of his experiences growing up near Troy, Ala., while weaving humor throughout his comments. Born the son of sharecroppers in 1940, Lewis grew up on his family’s farm and attended segregated public schools in Pike County, Ala. As a young boy, he was inspired by the activism surrounding the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the words of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. he heard on radio broadcasts. Meeting King in subsequent years only bolstered his commitment to the civil rights movement, he said.

Speaking about his childhood days and making the tie to his years in Congress, Lewis said, “I preached to the chickens in the 1940s and 1950s. They listened to me better than some of my colleagues today.”

Noting the significance of the NAACP, Lewis said, “We would not be where we are today without the NAACP. It has been a bridge over troubled water, and we need it more now than at any other time. And the NAACP is more than a bridge. It’s been like a shepherd.”

Lewis spoke of hearing Martin Luther King. Jr. on the radio, noting that those broadcasts were the genesis of his later involvement in the civil rights movement. And he spoke of being arrested 40 times and beaten during the 1960s.

“The first time I was arrested I felt liberated,” Lewis said. “For more than 50 years I’ve been getting in trouble. But it’s good trouble to make our country a better place. And the NAACP, for more than 100 years, has been pushing to redeem the soul of America.”

Lewis also mentioned meeting a man who decades earlier had beaten him. The man was prompted by his son to apologize to Lewis.

“He came at the behest of his own son. He apologized and asked for forgiveness. I forgave him. We both cried,” Lewis said.

Speaking of King and his efforts, Lewis said this could only happen in America.

“If people say America can’t change, hasn’t changed, I say walk in my shoes and I’ll show you the changes,” Lewis explained. “Our forefathers came to this country in different ships, but we’re all in the same boat today.”

Lewis after his remarks was presented with local branch’s first Freedom Fighter Award.

A number of local residents also received recognitions at the banquet. Those included Fayette County High School student Nicholas Britt with the Youth Community Service Award, McDonald’s owners Benjamin and Kelly Alston receiving the Corporate Community Supporter Award, Fayette County School System Deputy Superintendent Fred Oliver receiving the Excellence in Education Award and Julia H. Wright receiving the Citizen and Community Activist Award for her service to organizations such as Southwest Christian Care and the Fayetteville Police Department.

And receiving the President’s Award was attorney and developer Wayne Kendall for his work in civil rights and real estate development.

Also at the banquet, Sandy Creek High School student and Fayette NAACP Youth Council President Dara Carter gave brief report on the council’s mission and goals. Carter stressed the importance of the youth council in helping foster future leaders.

Just sayin

Grizz feel free to bring the diversity to the NAACP. This doesn't just include race as it could be age, gender, religion, ideology, political affiliation, etc.

At the time of its founding, colored was the polite word for identifying those persons who were not white. There are card carrying members of other than the 'black' race. It is true that the vast majority of members are black. It will be interesting to see the outcome of this lawsuit. Maybe those who live in certain areas of FC who are dissatisfied with their representation can use their community organization to sue for district representation. That would leave 'race' out of the equation. Some have shared some interesting history about the voting pattern here in FC. I'm sure all of this will be considered in the judgement of the case. Just as some here in FC are hesitant to identify themselves as Democrats, I would not be surprised that not many non-colored folks associate with the NAACP. It's not like that in other parts of our country.

Why didn't whites receive any awards?

Could it be because the NAACP is a purely racist organization?

sorry grizz

Steve Brown(about as white as a white boy can be) won the NAACP Man of the Year Award several years ago, back in the days when he was 100% insistent on FC switching to district voting and accusing everyone in FC who disagreed as being some kind of backward bigots and even comparing the issue to slavery. Of course, like many other Steve Brown positions, he did a complete 180 because he wanted to get elected again and had suffered two massive defeats so it was time to drop that. Wonder if the NAACP asked for their award back?

Look at Godzilla about to put a serious hurt on Ghidorah!

Result of segregation

I'll learn. The races just weren't so 'divided' in man's thought in the 21st Century where I'm from. I have heard the history of Melear's customers of yesteryear. There are also members from the Hispanic population and the Asian population in the NAACP. In areas where human rights are concerned, the NAACP representatives are there for support of whatever minority population is seeking recognition and/or justice. I'm not hoping to change anyone's perception here - just sharing another reality from another region of this country. I'm also aware that not everyone here is limited in their knowledge of the NAACP - and the work that they have done and continue to do for anyone looking for justice in this country. I still think that Fayetteville is far ahead of other small towns in our country. It's a shame that some hold on to the old days in their thought. Isn't that what they accuse me of doing? Open your eyes! Blacks, Hispanics, Asians and whites get along fine here when in public. I have no idea how they get along in other areas. I see integrated churches, integrated community gatherings, etc., etc., etc. Guests in my home have been of all backgrounds - and I have been a guest in homes other than 'black'. Why can't people see the good that is here in 2011 and celebrate that. If it were otherwise, I would be sharing that too. Believe me, when I first came here - I did not expect to find the race-relations among citizens in Fayetteville to be what I have experienced in the last seven years. I feel great about what I have found here!! I'm just surprised that others find it difficult to celebrate this! Oh well. (About Herman - true conservatives, I feel, do support him - but others in the Republican Party are not ready for a 'black' candidate for the office of President. IMHO)

Oh Herman

You should have heeded Andy Young's words. In the north you can go as high as you can - just don't get too close. Here in parts of the south, among some Republicans, you can get close, just don't try to get too high. I have had conversations with many here who honestly support Herman Cain, but Jeff and others were right, they couldn't stand his common sense approach which was keeping him a front runner - so they used the 'sex' thing. We'll see how this goes. They brought in the big guns - Gloria Allred no less! I wouldn't be surprised if his Koch brothers are footing the bill! Well Clinton survived his scandals . And Obama survived the birthers. Maybe Herman will survive this!

Now, DM, you can't honestly say that the reason they brought up

the 'sex' thing was because Cain is black--the opposition would have brought it up if he were purple. After all, Clinton was white and they sure tried to crucify him-- I do think at one time Clinton was made an "honorary" black, but I think that had nothing to do with the sex thingy. Either side would 'out' their mother if she were a member of the other party and if we are being honest we would have to admit that. It may seem crass, but I myself feel what a person does in their own bedroom or on some office floor is none of our business, that is unless they have forced someone either through actual force or coersion because of their position etc. Anyone who has read much history knows that just about every president dallied on the side or had a mistress that was known to all but the voters. To put it bluntly, I would rather our politicians do it to a willing participant than to the country, as many of our politicians have been doing for some time now.

It's more of a liberal mob thing. This is what liberals do to people they don't like - they attack their character no matter what color.

Never meant to suggest that the sex thingy was done because he was 'black'. It is obvious that many 'white' people like what Cain has to say and the way that he says it. If you attack him on his weak economic policy, his lack of foreign policy experience, etc., etc., the Republicans may anger a large segment of their supporters. Nope, the moral thingy is a safe way to get him out of the picture . His popularity surprised many, especially Romney, Perry , and Ginrich. . and possibly Cain!
Politics is a hurtful process. Not for the weak or naive .

This is what I said:

That is for sure DM, and if they can't dig something up about

the candidate they will attack anyone in their family or any of their ancestors. Too sad it has to be that way. As I have said for a long time, the ones we would love to have as our representatives will not run or if they do run they don't last long. It is a sad state of affairs.

Cain won't survive

His ideas are really weak and not thought-out(9-9-9? What?), he's horrible and ignorant on foreign policy, and doesn't think too well on his feet when live microphones are around.

Clinton "survived" because he lied pretty convincingly(to some) on 60 Minutes as did his wife Hilary repeatedly before he was elected, then was serving out his 2nd term when all of his BS caught up with him, so it didn't really matter too much.

The birthers? What a joke and no comparison to what is going on with Cain. A better example might be Clarence Thomas vs. Anita Hill, though Hill was the only one going after him. John Edwards and Gary Hart? Best to already be elected President or not running for that office if you've got major morality issues. Ask Newt Gingrich about that.

Even without the harassment issues, Cain had as little of a chance of going the long-haul as a Bachman.

Doesn't that just leave Mitt as the only viable candidate? But, isn't he just a whiter version of Obama? You think that difference in shade will be enough for the Repubs to nominate him, magic underwear and all?

Happy Election Day!

This is what happens to blacks who venture from the liberal thug plantation: SEIU Attack Black Tea Party Patriot

The liberals attack them without provocation. That's why you won't see them on camera - they are afraid of the liberal thugs that make up Obama's "base".

Just look at the high-tech lynching of Herman Cain. The liberal thugs find some nameless skank and pay her off in some lame attempt to bury poor Herman. This is what democrats do when they know their candidate can't win on his record.

It's not the liberals who are afraid of Herman Cain. The color-blind of the Republican Party are scaring the crap out of those who think they're in control of this primary. Look in your own house for the cause of the 'smell'. Cains anti- union stand caused the union attack - not his color. He would be attacked by them if he was green with purple polka dots ! Black activists, like all activists, don't hide from the camera. But you keep trying. Thanks for sharing your perception.

Aren't you up bright and early, you cute little cuddly thing you! Have a nice day - and thanks for sharing the July North Star article. (We know that the name calling will continue/ from both sides - we're moving on.)

Is the Job's Daughters diversified? Might be - I don't know, but finding out is not on my bucket list. What I like to point out is the integrated churches here in FC; the integrated restaurants, etc., etc. Big positive difference since the 50's. Diversified means 'not exclusively' one race, etc . Does it bother you that there are still some predominantly black groups even after integration became the custom of our country? Guess what, predominantly white groups, as long as they don't denigrate me and mine, don't bother me at all. Take a deep breath and enjoy life. If you don't like my clarifications regarding generalizations regarding race, DON'T read my posts! Nighty nite!
