Jury acquits Savannah man on meth possession charge

A Fayette County jury today found a Savannah man not guilty of possession of methamphetamine, but guilty of giving a sheriff’s deputy a false name and date of birth.

Bruce Bernard Townsend, 38, was sentenced to 12 months in prison on the misdemeanor charge by Superior Court Judge Christopher C. Edwards.

Townsend was accused of possessing a pipe that tested positive for methamphetamine that was found inside the back of a patrol car immediately after he was arrested.

Townsend testified in the case, saying he admitting that he gave the false name and date of birth to the deputy but saying the pipe was not his and that he had not seen it before.

Assistant District Attorney David Younker in his closing argument noted that the deputy had not arrested anyone else that day prior to Townsend so the pipe had to be Townsend’s. He also noted that searching the backseat of the patrol car following an arrest is part of the deputy’s routine.

Townsend’s attorney, Emily Bass, argued that the prosecution could not prove the pipe was his because no fingerprint evidence was submitted as proof, nor was the item discovered during the deputy’s patdown of her client.

Younker noted that the deputy testified that that patdown was not a detailed one looking only for weapons and not contraband.

The deputy made contact with Townsend at the intersection of Westbridge Road and Westbridge Circle Feb. 10, 2009 after 1 a.m. while investigating a suspicious vehicle, according to the warrant for his arrest.

Townsend explained to the jury that he gave the deputy a false name and date of birth because he hoped to be released quickly since his girlfriend was due to give birth.

Any priors?

Check his RAP sheet. Any priors ?
Sentencing is based on many factors, not just 1 thing.

Are you saying that Lohan Hilton and others with rap sheets a mile long should be hung by now?

How about Glenn Campbell? etc. Anad a hundred other so-called "stars."
Not to mention those too rich to go to prison for dope.

12 Months?

A year in prison for giving a false name? You gotta to be kidding me. If everyone got a year in jail for telling a lie there would be no one left in the county. Obviously there is still a lot of work that needs to be done in the Fayette courts...namely finding some fair, competent judges.

And the meth pipe was obviously planted by the cops. Glad to see Ballard's minion lost that one. I mean, just look at the guy - what's missing is a big phat spliff in his mouth, not a meth pipe. :-)

bladder? So you're perfectly ok with this guy

hanging in your neighborhood at 1 a.m. And you're ok with him giving the cops a false name so he can be comfortable doing whatever he wants in your neighborhood that night because he has given the cops a false name and can't be tracked down.

I doubt it. I'm thinking you're the first one dialing 911 from under your bed when you see him out your window. And by the way, that's not his or anyone else's hair.

Oh, let's not forget; he's high on meth. Ask him in for a cup of coffee.

Where is my Cuz

Where is my Cousin Vinny when you need him? Boy. This is a prime example of how your rights (You know the ones granted to everyone in the Constitution) are violated routinely. Go spend time in a municipal court. I know the guy looks guilty. He may even be guilty but from this brief story, Did they prove the case? Even if they did. Even if they did is not 12 mos for a pipe, not possession, Cruel & Unusual? The 8th for those counting. Another example of a non-violent criminal taking up time & space & more importantly..money, in the "System." If he didn't have a record, he does now. If he could have possibly gotten a job, he can't. If he was going to do something for the Baby Mamma, he ain't. I'm not being just a Bleeding Heart Liberal... but this so-called War on Drugs ain't working & is costing, costing, costing. If it was Supply & Demand would indicate prices going up.

Do you know the guy? How

Do you know the guy? How about his record, you look that up? Is he violent? Who knows... except the Judge, the prosecutor and the arrested. I don't think many judges would sentence a year just for giving a false name if the guy didn't have a history of offenses.

Didn't know there was a law against hair, hair!

A year in jail for lying to a cop!

Didn't Lindsey Lohan lie about the coke she had to the cop? And the pocketbook NOT being hers?

She got out twice and is still out.

I'll admit her hair looks better than this dude.

You are correct, it was Paris Hilton. Lohan is in the news this week.

I think much of this is publicity. They want a movie role or a TV show and this is the best way to get one!

The more stupid they act, the more the teenagers (movie goers) want to be like them. They have handlers to set this stuff up.
