MOMS Club overhauls F’ville park

Step aside, the moms are on the job. True to their current mission, representatives of the MOMS Club of Fayetteville on Sept. 6 gave the Fayetteville City Council an update of their successful efforts to raise $20,000 for improvements to the Church Street Park near the downtown historic district.

MOMS Club member Christina Sherstad said the organization’s decision in March to provide new playground equipment at the park was the largest project they had undertaken. But thanks to a host of businesses, churches and nonprofits along with bake sales and a yard sale, those efforts came to fruition, said Sherstad.

“We are happy to announce that with all this community help, we have completed the fundraising for the playground equipment in just over four months,” Sherstad said. “We plan to continue fundraising to complete our vision of creating a gathering place for the entire community. We hope in the future to improve the picnic area, basketball court, parking, and accessibility to the site’s new amenities.”

So what did the determined moms get for their effort? The answer is a “Caterpillar Crawl” activity center for young children, along with a toddler clubhouse, a commercial swing set and a playground border, ramp and mulch.

“This local club noticed the playground equipment at Church Street Park needed updated equipment. Instead of expecting the city to find the funds to replace this equipment, this club made a commitment to the community to find the funds necessary to make Church Street Park a more pleasant play time experience,” said Fayetteville Director of Community Development Brian Wismer.

Considering that the park upgrade project just began a few months ago, it leads one to wonder what these moms might take on next. And whatever it is, they will likely succeed.
