Fewer Fayette students in classes this year than last

Years of explosive growth behind them, Fayette schools now face declining numbers

A school system that a decade ago was growing by an elementary school a year has shifted into reverse. All age groups are affected as elementary schools, middle schools and high schools — with a few exceptions — are having fewer students show up for classes.

Preliminary student enrollment in Fayette County public schools is down by approximately 2.5 percent so far this year compared to the same time last year. And last year was slightly down from the previous year.

So far only six schools in the system are showing increases in student population this year. It remains to be seen if final enrollment figures will represent the downward trend that began in the 2007-2008 school year.

Preliminary figures provided by the Fayette County School System for Aug. 16 showed 21,216 students enrolled in the county’s schools compared to 21,775 enrolled on Aug. 19, 2009. That difference of 559 fewer students this year equates to approximately 2.5 percent fewer students in the school system.

It is important to note that enrollment figures always build somewhat as the school year unfolds. The school system by mid-September usually has a reasonable idea about what total enrollment will look like for the year.

Enrollment at the county’s 17 elementary schools shows a student population of 8,520 on Aug. 16 compared to 8,702 on Aug. 19, 2009, a difference of 182 fewer students for the comparative period in the lower grades.

Enrollment at the county’s six middle schools showed a smaller difference in the number of students this year, with 5,128 enrolled last week compared to 5,177 a year ago, a difference of 49.

And at the county’s five high schools, an enrollment of 7,821 in August 2009 gave way to an enrollment of 7,487 in mid-August this ear, a difference of 334 fewer students.

Most schools around the county are currently experiencing relatively small decreases in student population compared to this time last year. But there are a few exceptions where enrollment has already increased over last year.

Of the county’s 17 elementary schools, four thus far have shown a small increase in student population over the same period last year and all are in the Peachtree City/Tyrone area. Those include Kedron Elementary, Oak Grove Elementary, Peachtree City Elementary and Tyrone Elementary.

And Fayette has two middle schools and one high school that are seeing small increases over this time last year. They, too, are in Peachtree City and Tyrone and include Booth Middle, Flat Rock Middle and Starr’s Mill High.

A look at the enrollment figures previously supplied by the school system shows a steady increase in the student population from 2001 through 2007. Those figures began to decline in 2008, a trend that continued through the 2010 school year that ended in May.

2010 - 21,775 (as of January 2009)

2009 - 22,047

2008 - 22,108

2007 - 22,367

2006 - 22,291

2005 - 21,531

2004 - 21,195

2003 - 21,314

2002 - 20,337

2001 - 19,832

Though small numbers of students do move into the system throughout the year, the Fayette County School System by mid-September should have a good handle on what the total student population will look like.

Fayette enrollment

OR does it have to do with the fact that the school system FINALLY asked for proof of residency for the first time in 3 or 4 years?? This should be done each and every year regardless of the students continous enrollment status. It would be very easy to relocate out of the county and continue to send a child to the same school he/she has been attending all along. I was very happy to get the request...not that it is fail proof but it is still a step in the right direction.

School population decreasing

I think it is so funny that people criticize the population in Fayette County/PTC. We moved here , along with a large number of others, for the schools. My daughter's grade level has always been the largest at her school and probably the reason Starr's Mill has an icrease in numbers. At our parent event last night, the place was packed with parents eager to be involved in their child's school life. The lifestyle here comes at a certain price everyone can't afford. If you are not happy, please move somewhere else. We like it here just the way it is.

School and general population

The general population of Fayette is also decreasing relative to surrounding counties, take a look. This means a declining tax digest of property owners coupled with the economic crisis will make it essential that our County governments get our collective house in order. Shrink the school system. Reduce the debt or refinance it now and start being very selective on the type of government funded programs we need. Avoid at all cost additional debt funding and look for creative ways to raise taxes on those demanding services. We need to shrink the size and scope of government now to avoid a financial crisis here in the county later.

A simple answer

All you need to do to understand these numbers is spend an afternoon at the ever expanding Fayette Senior Center or ride around PTC on a golf cart and note the huge number of Geritol users riding around. Fayette is not where young families move to. It has become the Sun City Center of Atlanta. God's waiting room.

Gee, that Viagra must be exceeding all expectations if

most of the residents are all so old they are waiting for the grim reaper. I sure see lots of school age children and lots of young women with young children and still more pregnant women. I just counted back and came up with ten young pregnant women I saw today and I only went to a nail salon, to get my hair cut and to an early dinner (and no, it was not the senior special!). Yes, there are some of us older folks here but in many cases we have been here for years and in some cases our children have married and remained here. If this big drop in enrollment came in the last year, I would venture to say it is not because we have suddenly been inundated with post-ovulating women and past---------- men!

God's Waiting Room

Interesting. If and when the economy improves - young people will come to Fayette County for the 'new homes' in the 'new developments' - and the school system. Retirees purchased homes here because of the anticipated 'resale'/investment value of homes based on the school system's reputation. The retirees will remain - because it is such a pleasant place to live - after years of hard work. Not a bad waiting room at all. What goes down - will eventually come up - and young families will be able to and will want to move to Fayette County. It's a great place to raise kids - just ask the parents who are still on that part of life's journey.

You are partially correct

Yes, when the economy improves, the young will come for the new houses and developments, but I doubt the school system. In that, they may be very disappointed when they taste the reality of that. Perhaps the numbers are fewer because many are choosing to home school their children. An elementary school needs new leadership desperately. One high school needs to eliminate the old, bitter Vice Principal whose goal is to make the lives of anyone, who slightly resembles his son, life miserable. The schools need to focus on education, not petty crap and "investigations" of normal child activity. Maybe folks are just tired of the BS and have decided to pull out and go it on their own. At least then, they know their children are learning and they are getting real education. If they do get in trouble, it will be for something worth worrying about. But, more than likely they won't get into trouble at home because the things at school they spent time for were ridiculous or petty. Good for all you parents who home school - you are bringing up the next generation of sensible adults.

Home Schooling

It never dawned on me that any parent who wished could take up teaching at the kitchen table!
I suppose some of them know enough of the theory of mathematics, science, history facts, and childhood development, to teach some of that.
However they are not professionals and will teach all other principles about getting along with others as they deem it correct.
I'm afraid most current parents are either nutty and only know one religion.
Might I suggest that they also get their college "degrees" from Phoenix or any of the scores of electronic offerings for a great deal of money. They will really learn that way how to be a loner. MAs and PhDs are only $100,000. Noone will hire them however except for those same "schools."

I am sure that there are some up to the task but I would not be 1 w/ my Big 10 degree. I do know 1 around me (told his older sis was too but she's dropped out) who told me he's bored until everyone comes home. I'm not sure what the cir'lum is but it ends well before 3:15. I don't guess the state can police this or do they have to take the CRT also & show progress?

Some parents do know what they are doing and actually teach their kids and it shows when they transition to a traditional school setting. Traditional as we observe today, right? However, I've seen the ugly side of it as well....where the children aren't taught anything and are severely lacking in basic skills. I'm sure I will get ugly comments regarding what I am about to write, but The Campus is such an institution. I learned of a student that transferred to a local high school with credit for certain math classes for which he had no business receiving credit. His skill level is FAR below average and now he is in a bind because The Campus, in giving those grades/credit, has stated that he has certain knowledge and the kid was placed in the "appropriate" math course as per his transcripts. He can't retake classes for which The Campus has already given credit. With Georgia's new diploma and math curriculum, this kid is going to have an extremely difficult time. Parents need to be careful when choosing a nontraditional school.

I pretty much agree with you regarding the online schools. Why pay 3x as much and not have the degree recognized by other institutions of higher learning? How would one learn math over the internet anyway? And I would NOT go to an MD that earned his degree over the internet. But that's just me.

There are some people that I know who home school that I shake my head at realize a box of rocks is going to get the equivalent education while just sitting in the yard. On the other hand I've seen many, many home schooled children that rival or excel above the vast majority of public school grads. Most home schoolers adjust just fine when entering college. Some "transition" poorly or barely at all.

But...when I look at the products produced by the public schools I see successful students as well as seeing a bunch of unedumacated misfits too. The only advantage the unedumacated home school kids have is usually a more respectable upbringing as a result of being mentored more by their parents.

As for my kids.... I'm very, very pleased with the public school educators that are involved in my children's education. Very pleased and grateful to this point. But if circumstances change we will move to a private school or home school situation if necessary.

So hey! We can pick both sides of this argument apart. The circumstances and end results vary greatly from district to district and family situation to family situation.

Enjoy this gorgeous day.

Git, as I posted on another site a while back regarding Village

Cafe, it was not a good experience at all. The food was less than mediocre. My pork roast looked greyish blue--I didn't even try it. I was totally disappointed with it as was my dining companion. Maybe it has gotten better. I went around 5 on a Sunday and only one other couple was in the place. All the waitstaff and manager/owner gathered around the front entrance area and stayed there the whole time I was there. Server was okay---he certainly had nothing else to do---our food was not even warm. Asked for cup of hot fresh coffee--server said he was making new pot--when we got it it was old and cold!! Will be a long time before I go back. Was disappointed as I really enjoyed the previous location. They said it was same chef but food certainly did not look or taste the same. The owners, I was told by my server, are several young men who own the pizza restaurant and the Mexican restaurant in the same shopping center. The owner/manager who had been laughing and joking with the serving staff standing around door, did come over and apologize about the pork roast and brought me out some bbq ribs which tasted liked bottled sauce had been poured over them--- and again they were cold as were the mashed potatoes. By then I figured it was a lost cause and we left soon after.

Git, if Bonkie was ever happy he would be miserable. I think we

should run a contest on this site and see if there is even one thing that he is or was ever happy about. For the life of me, I cannot imagine him as a young child, young man or anything but a miserable, surly old man. I have this game I play where ever I go. If I see an old f--t who looks miserable, I wonder if that is Bonkie. If he is belligerent and complaining about the price, service, etc, I convince myself it is Bonks. Sometimes I let myself daydream, and convince myself that he is this tall, handsome smiling gentleman with beautiful white hair and a wonderful smile which he bestows on all who come into his line of vision. If the truth be known HE is probably in reality, a kind, cookie-baking grandmother who knits bootees for the little ones in the hospital and takes her tenderly used coats and shoes down to the nearest shelter so those less fortunate will be warm in the winter. He/she is surrounded by her loving children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who pay rapt attention as he/she tells them of the wonderful childhood he/she lived in that little house on the prairie. A single tear falls down that wizened cheek as thoughts of that happy life brings a smile to that kind, angelic face. No--even I do not have that great an imagination---better to just accept the fact that he is a miserable, irrascable, old goat who never has a kind word for anyone. That is our man of many names---and we are stuck with him. You must admit though that he sure can digress from a subject like no one else can---half the time you don't even know what he is talking about and I sometimes wonder if he does.

Git, I think the only time he likes Obama is when others here

don't. I think he is trying to be a gadfly and only succeeds in being a pesty gnat. I think he also may be a wannabe debater as he will take any side against anything anyone says-the only problem is that those other guys take him so far afield he can never get back on track. I think we need to find out where he hangs out and show up there en masse with a brass band and cheerleaders--since the Foxy gals probably won't be available. I am sure he is going to miss Dagmar Midcap as she was the foxiest of them all even if she wasn't on Fox. Maybe we can get some regulars from The Red Door or some other establishment in town to join us and I am sure we could get a few firemen and policemen to join us as he always has such nice things to say about them. Better yet, I think we should start a grassroots movement to have him run for office. He can be our write-in candidate---we could start local, go state and then the sky is the limit--I am sure they didn't have birth certificates when he was born but it seems they are not a pre-requisite for candidates so he shoud be a shoo-in. I'll help with the posters. We'll let him make all the phone calls himself--that should be a hoot. Think of how much he could accomplish--he could be President, VP, Secretary of State and all nine Supremes, That could be one way to get us back on that fiscal track. I say Bonks for Pres------after 'Boma has his four, if there is anything left at that time.

Hutch, even I, a female in every sense, admired her many assets

and what a smile. Don't know if you read it or not but there was a column on line AJC by HO {I no longer get delivery of paper--but that is another story}explaining why she is leaving. Her boyfriend who evidently had been going through some heavy depression issues committed suicide last year and she has been having a hard time getting past it--she has decided to move away completely and possibly start on a new career--something dealing with animals, perhaps. She will probably end up in CA or maybe back in Canada, they speculate. It was a very well written article and if you haven't seen it go to the site and read it. I knew she was not on from time to time and at times did not seem as vibrant as usual but she sure is a trooper. She will be missed---I am sure there are even those males who did not care if she had a weather map or not. They would have just been happy to have her point and talk. Her voice is outstanding. She just oozes sex appeal. I hope she is able to be happy again. Goes to show you, we really do not ever know what is going on in someone's else life.

Barack Obama VS An Intelligent Little Girl

Barack Obama was seated next to a little girl on an airplane trip back to Washington. He turned to her and said, "Let's talk. I've heard that flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger."
The little girl, who had just opened her book, closed it slowly and said to The Obama, "What would you like to talk about?"
"Oh, I don't know," said the Obama. "How about What Changes I Should Make To America?" and he smiles.
"OK," she says. "That could be an interesting topic. But let me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff - grass. Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, and a horse produces clumps of dried grass. Why do you suppose that is?"
Obama, visibly surprised by the little girl's intelligence, thinks about it for a second and finally says, "Hmmm, I have no idea."
To which the little girl replies, "Do you really feel qualified to change America when you don't know $hit?"

Unfortunately little girls and people who think such unlikely jokes are progressive do not get to run the United States Government. President Obama doesn't ride airliners either.

The combined forces of the brainpower of Git and company couldn't handle four hours of being President without collapsing from mental exhaustion! Even if the little girl was the chief adviser!

I regret that the President hasn't been able to find 15 million jobs, end two wars, overhaul Wall Street, stop the Banks' collapse, rid the deficit of nine trillion dollars, in 18 months, and pay off all companies debts and individual credit cards.

This mess is a five -seven year do-over, I'm afraid.
Be thankful that you have someone who has the intelligence and energy to do it quicker!

over a joke; buy okay you forced the rest of the story out of me. The plane was Air Force One and the little girl was his oldest daughter.

Later in the flight he had the Steward open the emergency door a threw twenty one dollar bills out the door and said "See girls I just made twenty people happy!" The girls clapped and giggled so once again he threw twenty more dollars out of the plane and said; "We just made twenty more people happy!" The Steward walked away and mumbled; "Why don't you throw yourself out and make everyone down there happy."

Well, I'll keep going but the stories go all the way back to

the Clintons. One day during Hillary's run for the Office of President she walked out on their New York balcony and to her horror observed that someone had written with an unusually vitamin enriched yellow urine in the winter snow; "Hillary Sucks!"
Hillary was furious. She demanded the resources of the United States Secret Service to look into the matter. Three days after the matter she asked for a meeting with the Special Agent in Charge of the Secret Service to report on the matter. The Secret Service SAC reported the matter appeared unsolveable. Hillary could not accept this report and demanded details stating; "In this age of DNA science how is it you cannot determine the donor of the urine?" The SAC resonded; "Senator we have determined the donor of the urine to be your husband, President Clinton. This, however does not resolve the matter. The handwriting analysis proved to be that of Barbara Streisand.

had the time to play golf over 70 times. Take vacation after vacation. Send his wife off to Spain with 40 of her friends plus assorted attendants and Secret Service.

He has had the time to take over approx 1/5 of the US economy in the form of Universal Healthcare which by the way MOST of America DID NOT WANT. But in a fit of "father's know best" decided to jam it down our throats anyway.

He has had the time to spend, in 19 months 830+BILLION dollars on a failed stimulus plan. BTW side note here the war in Iraq was 709 Billion over 10 years.

He has had the time to bail out Wall street, the banks and take over GM.

But just didn't seem to have the time to work out the Economy, Jobs or that little oil problem in the Gulf. He was way to be busy to be bothered.

Had tee times you know.

cyclist: expanding on our mess

I responded to Git about the little gitl, I mean girl.

I would like to tell you something now after reviewing the latest figures on unemployment month ending July 2010.

If the method the government uses is used we now have about 9.5% unemployment not considering those who don't or can't work, nor those who have given up looking nor those working part-time or underemployed. Jails, hospitals, etc. also not included--nor military, nor mentally ill like some of us, or the retired (big bunch---especially from the governments and military).

OK, 9.5% they say is about 50,000,000 are determined to be without a job who want one.
For those of you who think President Obama or anyone else could find that many jobs in 18 months of service, then can you recommend how since that would be about 2,800,000 jobs found for every month in office!

We have stopped losing 7-800,000 per month as was the case when Obama took office, but we are not gaining very many (2-300,00 per month) due to population increase of working age and more additional jobs lost every month.

That should be obvious to even you all! We had a mess. Hopefully the predictions of a repeat recession soon are wrong. Making light of the President doesn't correct this situation nor will electing another bunch of right wingers ever hope to make it better---just worse for the working person.

Something else you need to get involved in besides pounding on a man working hard: Our about a million soldiers who have served since 2002, 4-5,000 of whom have been killed and 24,000 who have been wounded. The VA is NOT still taking proper care of them. Suicides and divorces are way up among them.

Are you concerned? What kind of people will wish to man our next army?

Do you really believe most of that crap you just pecked out?

For those of you who think President Obama or anyone else could find that many jobs in 18 months of service, then can you recommend how since that would be about 2,800,000 jobs found for every month in office!

Yes. Restore incentives and remove the cost of our government out of the products we export so as to make us more competitive globally. Secondly... reduce the bureaucracy of increased compliance burdens that I'm getting hammered with on a daily basis and remove the threats of higher taxes, increased fees and taxes while encouraging businesses through policy mandates instead of demonizing us on daily basis. Reduce the COST of employing people instead of increasing it in such a way that businesses are afraid to take on new hires. There is a whole list of items that can help. Unfortunately all that your Mullah Obama can do is pretend like the government is the answer and controlling more of how businesses function. How many billions pissed away with no tangible results to show for it?

One thing you are correct about is that Mullah Obama cannot create these jobs. So the answer is for him to get the hell out of the way and let us Americans create them ourselves.

WHAT POPULATION INCREASE???? Many in the workforce are exiting it due to reaching retirement age. The illegals are returning home and influx of more illegals is being repressed due to no opportunities for them. We're not creating jobs you old fool. Are you that freaking delusional?

Shameful isn't it. While your god runs around the country vacationing and chasing golf balls and who-knows-what-else we have wounded vets that do not get the proper care they deserve. We do agree on this. We have Hussein Obama looking out for his special interest business interests and throwing around money to his cronies with congress doing the same. How much of that money could have diverted to aid our injured and suffering war heroes? I wonder how much each round of golf actually costs the taxpayers and how much improved care could have purchased in its place? I wonder how much VA care could have been improved with Queen Michelle's Paris trip and her frequent party jaunts to New York? Our first lady sure seems to be in competition with Paris Hilton don'tcha think?

Yes. I'm concerned. The question that begs an answer is why you so blindly follow and defend this demi-god president you so worship. If Bush were doing the EXACT same things you would be coming unhinged. Shame on you old fool.

One thing that Obama has succeeded in is improving the images of both George W Bush and Jimmy Carter.

I'll bet you were home-schooled!

I know a few home-schoolers---the kids hate it usually.

I have no thoughts about Village Cafe---it is just a name bought by new owners I hear.
Since I can't have a garden or pigs, and as long as grocery stores exist, I don't care much about socializing in nasty restaurants---they all are, it is why many have stomach problems all of the time. They are also a good excuse to drink lots of alcohol.

Not sure do a few. I know many and most of them love being home schooled. But same as those in public schools..... they all dislike school.

Ahhhh... I'm sorry you socialize. You should try it. Cept next time put a smile on your face, don't snarl at the waiter or the other guests enjoying themselves and having a good time. And if you would actually tip the waiter and display more of a gracious attitude..... others might feel compelled to socialize with you. And if you're nice enough... you might even get a hug from some pretty young thing that possesses those FOX babe legs you drool over.
