F’ville moves to allow alcohol sales near some churches

Fayetteville City Council (file photo).

The Fayetteville City Council Aug. 5 will hear the first reading of a proposal that would do away with the distance restriction in shopping centers and on the Old Courthouse Square that separates churches and businesses serving alcohol. The ordinance currently states that businesses serving alcohol must be at least 100 yards from a church.

City staff is proposing an amendment to the alcohol ordinance changing the distance requirement between shopping centers, commercial properties located on the Old Courthouse Square and churches.

“We have noticed a trend lately where temporary church facilities are locating in (shopping) centers thereby restricting the allowed use of those commercial centers by retailers of alcoholic beverages,” city staff said. “The proposed amendment would exempt businesses within (shopping) centers and commercial properties located on the Old Courthouse Square from the 100-yard distance limitation from church facilities.”

As it stands currently, and as it applies to shopping centers and to the south and west sides of Old Courthouse Square, a business already located within 100 yards of a storefront that becomes occupied by a church would be grandfathered, but a business that wants to move in where a church is already operating in an existing store front less than 100 yards away would not be allowed to do so.

Also at the meeting, Courtney’s Cafe could have its alcohol license suspended for 15 days due to delinquencies on paying its mixed drink tax. Though paid up at this time, city staff maintain that the business has been served late payment notices by certified mail and by code enforcement on a number of occasions. The owner has not made an effort to come into compliance and continues to be late paying his monthly mixed drink taxes, staff said.

Hey Cy,

I've been trying to stay under the radar, as they say; but trouble still seems to find me!

I've gone to Partner's a couple of Fridays, where were you?!?

And the beach was WONDERFUL, had a great time, not long enough, but great time.

What does one do "at the beach" in 100 degree weather on hot sand and oil stained sand 2 feet deep?

I think one can eat and drink in Atlanta area. I have gone a few times in my life but never saw the great attraction in the red-nek riviera or Myrtle's beach.

I really want to know what it is, since all I saw was drainage from condos coming under the sand, sand full of pee and gum, cheap drinks at twice their worth, and rental umbrellas and chairs way too expensive.

I did view the beach in Southern France once, Near Monaco, and at least the bottom piece only women's bathing suits and slick waiters to your tent
keeping the table full was enjoyable. Two meals served if you wanted it.

Had no drainage, no oil, no pee, gum, or drinks, so I can't speak to that, where exactly do you go to find all that? My interets lie in the private beach I know, where very few people go, ocean breezes, the waves, peace and quiet, no phones ringing, no computer, just doing absolutely nothing, it's called rest and relaxation. Thanks for asking.

Thank you for your case.
A private beach (which I assume you own) isn't what I am looking for! The masses of humanity shown on Tv is what I need info on!

No Alcohol Sales Within 100 yds Of A Church is

a dumb ordinance anyway--wipe it off the books!

Especially if the Church came after the fact..

But I agree, the ordinance is dumb.

Don't the Catholics drink alcohol inside the church? All over the world!

What kind of baloney is this? It won't rub off onto the church!

100 yrd rule? really?

This needs to be done. I'm tired of seeing every 10 people in this county opening a church. Especially in a strip mall. I know the owners/landlords need the tenets, but you only go a few days a week. Besides, if I follow a different faith, that allows alcohol consumption, why do I need someone to tell me where I can drink it?
Makes me wonder how I could open a restaurant that serves alcohol with all of the strip mall churches popping up like weeds lately. Must be all the rain.

The booze will be flowing in Fayetteville, WWJD Mayor Steele?

The ordinance prohibiting the sale of alcohol works just fine, leave it alone. Where are the morals Mayor Steele?

So you're saying I should be bound by your beliefs even if I don't believe that myself? What about the Jewish people, do they have to knuckle under to your beliefs?

Mayor Steele is a fellow New Hope member so you bet ya on the WWJD. But you are right about the other faiths. If the mayor was a Muslim he would vote the changes down. If he were a Jew he would follow the law. If he were a Buddhist he would free us of the alcohol altogether.

The mayor acts like a practicing Democrat so he's probably going to ban the churches instead.

First off, I ain't your boy, second, you never answered the question, of course, I never expected you to. The self righteous people like you never do. I always thought the elected officials were supposed to do whats right by us, not what's right by their religion. My father-in-law is a preacher and a practicing Democrat, so the two aren't exclusive of each other. By all means tell us how devout you are and how morally superior you are, and how we should live our lives by your rules.

The Jews are special. They do not have to believe in Christ as the Saviour. They have special dispensation.

It's funny johenry

That you seem to have forgotten from Bible School 101 that drinking alcohol is not in of itself a "sin" and Jesus turned water into wine, not orange juice. Of course, ignorant fundies and their Taliban-style preachers ranting about "yer goin' to HAIL(or is that hay-yell?)have convinced plenty of sheep that probably putting rubbing alcohol on a wound to sterilize it gets you an eternal burning.

Prohibition worked really well didn't it? Great idea. Almost as STUPID and and as big of a colossal failure as the "War on Drugs."

See ya there, you seem to have forgotten that judge not lest ye be......thingy. Luckily I know some real Christians and won't judge them all by the standards you set. What an orifice you are.

I have a feeling that Hell is going to be a very crowded place!

Off subject, did you shave your head? raise a lot of money for your cause?

I'm sorry I did not attend the head shaving, I've been a little preoccupied lately.

Hope you are doing well,

Shannon Dawn

Here's a link that shows the head shaving, that's me getting shaved first, it was a fun event, and we raised over $4100 for children's cancer.

. . that means so much to so many. Having worked with children who were recovering from a bout with cancer - the 'gift' of hair during recovery made their 'coming back to school' so much more tolerable.

Wow!!! You look 20 years younger! Have you/are you going to grow your beard out again?

As promised, I've been trying to grow my hair longer for the 10 inches needed for 'locks for love'.

You are great guy, Hutch. Keep doing all that you do.

Welcome back, if there is a Hell, I'm sure it will be crowded, and with a lot of surprised people too, I'm sure.

I did shave the head, and raised $1500 for the kids. Who knew people would pay that much to see ol' hutch's bare head. I am doing well, thank you and I hope you're doing well too. You need to come see us at Partner's in Fayetteville one Saturday night, I know Jean and Tim would be happy to see you.

Jane: So that's why my ears were burning! Hope you are doing well, we'll all have to get together again soon.

Hutch: I had heard that Tim was playing there, but didn't know when. I'd love to come hear him play and Jean is such a sweet lady, I'd love to see her again. I had also heard that he's playing at Longbranch from time to time. Please send them my best. I'll try to get over to Partner's but I don't know when that will be. I meet with my surgeon this afternoon to discuss skin grafting which will put me out of commission for a while.

Just to let you know, my email has changed to weldonshannon@comcast.net. Please pass it along to Tim.

Hoping to see you soon,

Shannon
