Brown to Fayette News: ‘If you want to be fair, do both sides’

Pat,

I understand “it ain’t a perfect world,” I would respectfully disagree that friend and superior at the place of employment are quite different. Ed Wyatt has contractual obligations with the county government regarding the WFB. He also stands to be the biggest winner on the road to nowhere. Those dealings were no more private than your newspaper printing the list of who donated to what campaigns (those are private citizens too).

Why no comment on the Hofrichter and Howard ads mentioning candidates without permission as well? There’s not a whole lot of difference, but your piece was one-sided. For that matter, were all the candidates consulted about Dan Langford’s Facebook rants as well.

If you want to be fair - and I read your column - do both sides. Your telling me that Harold Bost’s mailing is somehow different than Hofrichter and Howard’s ads is just plain wrong.

I think it was pretty clear that Langford and Wyatt are friends. He said so and I quoted him as saying so. At that point, if anyone thinks he wasn’t a little biased about his opinion, then they’re not thinking clearly.

As far as Take Back Fayette County is concerned, the article wasn’t so much about the truth in the flyer, it was about two other things -

A — Langford’s articulation about how private citizens are being brought into political wars and

B — that most of the candidates mentioned in the ad didn’t get any input into what was printed even though their names were used in it. That was the point of the article.

Truth or no truth to the newsletter itself wasn’t even mentioned — merely what some people (the candidates included) thought about it.

And the times I’ve mentioned you in a story have been in connection with county commission comments — I was there — I didn’t have to call you. I even call you when Herb says something about you. Or, at the minimum, email you for your response. I do the same when you say something about someone else. I call or email for a response. And believe me, I’ve taken plenty of flack over it too when you say something confrontational. It’s part of the business, and quite frankly that doesn’t bother me.

But I’m not Langford or Wyatt and they were upset and so, really, were the candidates I talked to. That is NOT my OPINION — it is fact as evidenced by the candidates’ comments.

Pat,

Do you know that Dan Langford works for Ed Wyatt?

Wyatt is on the Board of Directors where Langford works as the business manager. Why wasn’t that disclosed in your article?

I think the one thing you missed was Dan is no different that Take Back Fayette County — the only difference is Dan uses the Internet instead of the US Postal service. Harold Bost’s group is using the same tactics that Dan Lanford uses.

For the record, I read the mailed flyer and the information regarding the county commissioners is true.

Just to remind you, there have been plenty of times you have run a story with me in it and not bothered to call me.

Thanks.

I agree Bruce

The great thing about Fayette County is the citizens are willing to fight to keep their quality of life. Drive through the other metro counties and look what has happened to them. They have all their buses, trains and packed development and it all looks run down.

Our county has always had a little good old boy interest group that wants to rule the kingdom, making some money off of development in the county. We have done a pretty good job keeping them in check over the last decade.

If you want to call Harold Bost "Boss Hogg" and Mike Hofrichter "Cooter," have at it, but we are not going to lose sight of the issues that are important to us.

The TSPLOST is a big one. They have had to sick the paid lobbyist on me to try to turn the tide in Fayette County. It will not work. Grassroots efforts from all over metro Atlanta are demanding they are not going to bow to special interests wanting to make a buck off of us and we still remain stuck in traffic.

Bruce - TSPLOST

I pray you are right!

When we started the battle, the pro-side had $8 million and we had $5,000.

The first poll showed the pro-side up at 51 percent and the latest WSB poll shows them at just 36 percent.

We have been blessed to have phenomenally talented people who volunteered loads of their time to the cause. And it never hurts to have the facts on your side either.

We will see Tuesday night.

Bruce Jordan, Your Books

First, I would like to say that I have really enjoyed reading your books.

I love Fayette County, our Old Courthouse, Starr's Mill, etc. I remember, as a child, going to McElroy Service Station (Courthouse Square) with my father to buy tires for our car. I've lived in Fayette County for well over 40 years. Along with other family members, we live on a parcel of property that is very dear to us.

While some counties around and north of Fayette County have succumbed to traffic and high-rise office buildings, I greatly appreciate the fact that we have not allowed development to take over completely. However, there are certain movers and shakers in Fayette County who are obsessed with growth.

Mamie Burks Allen (My Allen Relatives) once lived in the Burks House Hotel across from our Old Courthouse. Miss Mamie provided shelter there for a few roomers until 1976 when the property was sold to the county. I took my then ten year old son to an auction held there, and he bought a box of old keys that fit the locks of all the doors in the Burks House Hotel. I bought Miss Mamie's "Household Searchlight Recipe Book."

It was a sad day for me when Miss Mamie's house was torn down. That beautiful old home was replaced with the Holiday Inn Express.

Where my Lee family once owned a grist mill there is now a house.

What is so wrong with enjoying, appreciating, and preserving what we have for our future families?

Thirty years ago, Fayette County (Fayetteville, Peachtree City, Tyrone, Brooks, Woolsey) was advertised as being a wonderful place to live and raise a family.

What happened? People moved here in droves. Our local government and developers started ripping up pecan orchards that were planted when the county was founded. In the place of historic orchards we now have shopping centers and Wal-Marts.

A whole lot of other folks in Fayette County feel the same way I do. It would be a great shame if we don't preserve what our ancestors worked so hard to establish.

I am not so naieve to think there won't be some development and change, but when our local government officials acquiesce to a regional governance Fayette County will disappear. Fayette citizens are already experiencing the loss of our rights to an over powerful governance.

When our locally elected officials repeatedly ignore, manipulate, betray, and deceive the people of Fayette County, it is time to elect some new officials

Mudcat, you are often my hero

Great comments on the reality of Fayette County today. We need the way you keep everyone (BOE, BOC, Steve Brown, Major Mike etc..)in check. With some of the outrages claims made on these blogs, this site needs well grounded comments.

I see that you are still having problems with history. Would you be so kind as to point out any "outrageous claims" that you think that I have originated. If not, then perhaps we should discuss current history in regard to your unfortunate circumstances.

The ball is in your court Brucie.

Major Mike,

Given the fact that I misspelled "outrageous" in my blog, I'll give ya the misspelling of my name in yours. Other than that I'm not sure what you would want to discuss with me. We simply seem to disagree on some issues. That's what this site is all about. We think differently. We believe differently. Doesn't make me think less of you at all (except for the "Brucie" closing; that was just, well...juvenile.) My circumstances are not unfortunate, my life is outstanding. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger and I'm obviously not dead.
Have a blessed day whether you appreciate where it comes from or not.

Bruce Jordan -

I had to look at the blog about six times to see that I did indeed misspell your last name. Error noted and corrected. I also had to look several times to see that you had misspelled "outrageous". The mind's eye usually automatically translates those minor imperfections. The moniker "Brucie" was NOT meant in a derogatory fashion even though I can see how you could perceive it that way. A couple of my closest friends have called me "Mikie" for a whole lot of years.

We do indeed think and believe differently and that, in and of itself, does not make me think less of you. All of that said, you still did not point out any "outrageous claims" that you think that I have originated. And since you appeared to single me out and group me with the three political entities in your "in check" and "well grounded" comments it becomes rather obvious that you are avoiding substantiating your allegations. You very much appeared to be "firing back" when I semi-politely allowed another blogger the (much deserved) opportunity to make a complete (hate filled) fool of herself.

What doesn't kill you does NOT necessarily make you stronger - you of all people should understand that. Platitudes just don't cut it in the real world.

PS: For what it's worth, I linked my MS-Word spell checker with my (Google Chrome) browser. While it automatically flags most spelling errors, it does NOT cover my many grammatical errors.

The holdover commissioners side is on the ropes

The BOC lost two seats in 2010. In order to maintain power, supporters of the holdover commissioners are in fact, slamming the other candidates by resorting to such tactics as dredging up ten year old information. Although the holdover commissioners have a few skeletons of their own, the full page Bost diagram ad is merely an excuse to retaliate by slinging mud.

Since Brown and McCarty took office, the three holdover commissioners have always voted in unison on major issues. As long as this continues, there will be no way for those who elected Brown and McCarty to have fair representation on the BOC. I've seen Brown and McCarty vote against each other, but not the other three.

What we're seeing now is a last ditch effort to save what's left of the Jack Smith group of commissioners.Over the past few years, the citizens are finally getting educated as to how these commissioners have been operating.

Same Information Released In 2010

I find it extremely interesting that the information that was discussed in Pat Cooper's article pertaining to a certain owner of 333 acres along the W. Bypass was the exact same information (word for word) that was released to the public in 2010.

The property owner's (developer) name was published in 2010, also. However, in 2010 Brooks Mayor Dan Langford didn't have anything at all to say about that information.

It was word for word the exact same information.

So, what is different this year?

Was that person a friend of Mr. Langford in 2010? Did the man sit on the Board of Mr. Langford's employer in 2010? He does now.

I know he was a supporter of Jack Smith in 2010.

He owned the same property in 2010.

There is more to this than meets the eye!

In 2010 Phase II of the W. Bypass had not been started. In 2012, it has been started and yes it runs through the property owners land. I am not using the man's name because apparently that is the reason everyone is so upset.

Also, Steve Brown said that this certain property owner has "contractual obligations with the county government regarding the WFB." What's the deal with that?

What exchange of vitriol are you talking about?

There was a dialog on the article regarding Mayor Dan Langford who is getting a little hot under the collar because his candidates are losing their edge.

I don't mind Dan defending one of the board of directors of his employer, but I do wish that relationship was disclosed in the article.

Robert Horgan was arrested with marijuana - it was on the front page of the newspaper for months, so Dan shouldn't really have to jump out of his pants when Harold Bost put the fact on a flyer. The real surprise is that Dan is supporting Horgan and Hearn (the West Fayetteville Bypass duo).

Jack Smith voted our county into the regional mass transit plans - no surprise there either - but if you put it in a flyer, Dan takes exception because that's his candidate.

The hypocritical element of the whole thing is that Dan thinks the trash piece from Hofrichter and Howard is just fine.

The local Tea Party sent out a TSPLOST poll to elected officials, and Dan was the only one to say he supported the regional TSPLOST. So it looks like the vote count on TSPLOST is going to be 1 yes and 12,541 no.

I'm not sure what Fayette County News is or who Pat Cooper is, but Steve Brown is way over the top on this exchange of vitriol. Does anyone think an overreaction like this is appropriate? I sure don't

Mudcat - Defend what?

Defend what? There is nothing here except your boringly repetitious whining that Steve Brown should somehow keep silent when he is attacked.

Butt boy? I see that you have (far) exceeded the limits of your mental capabilities and have resorted to the basic defense mechanisms of your personality type. Whassa matter Mudcat, did that bad ole Stevie step on your rice bowl when he cleaned up some of the mess in PTC.

Psssst - Don't tell anyone but The Fayette County News has been around for over three decades that I am aware of and is the legal organ of Fayette County. Pat Cooper has been with the paper in one function or another since the early 90's (or before). http://fayettedailynews.com (sorry Cal, I know you don't like links).

Keep going genius, I'm sure that the general reader base here is able to sort things out with your somewhat unwitting help.

Yeah.... I would be proud

Steve Brown... for whatever your opinion... takes the time to research thoroughly. His comments are based on facts he has found. Sorry it rubs you the wrong way... We need more Steve Browns.

Just my humble opinion. Look around you at the "voting" public... Now there's an informed bunch.

And I might add, I would find more tasteful characterizations of people you find opposing in your viewpoint.

Yep trader, Steve Brown does research, Thanks fer yer 6 opinions

Mr. Brown researches things by holding his finger up in the air so he can see which way the winds of public opinion are blowing, Then he projects those ideas as his own. Naturally those that never pay attention to anything and are drawn to Steve Brown because of his maverick image hear new things from him that are actually old news and because Steve said it - it is gospel. Obama does the same thing - poll it first, say it second. Steve Brown supporters look to Jon Stewart and Entertainment Tonight for their news.

I must point out that the next Fayette County Commission Chairperson is almost certain to be Steve Brown. Nothing you can do about it.
