The thing about Brown: He’s most often right
Who is Steve Brown, former Peachtree City mayor and current Post 4 candidate for county commissioner? Some people attempt to cast him as a villain, while others laud his stand on contentious issues, Let’s explore two of them.
If it’s easy to find stories about Steve Brown (which it is), it’s even easier to find newspaper articles by Steve. And while you may not agree with all his positions, even his greatest detractors would have to concede that he thoroughly researches his subjects, which is particularly refreshing in an era of politicians who don’t even read measures they vote for.
Two past projects seem to have generated the most debate: the extension of TDK Boulevard from Peachtree City to Coweta County, and the Peachtree City Development Authority’s operation of the Tennis Center.
Time has proven Brown right on both of his very public crusades for citizens he represented. If you are an average homeowner wanting to preserve our great quality of life, Brown has been one of your greatest defenders.
TDK Boulevard — On Feb 7, 2003, then-Mayor Steve Brown signed the TDK Boulevard Extension Agreement with the Fayette County Commission, agreeing to extend that road “to promote adequate and safe means of transportation” and committing the city to a $200,000 contribution.
While the city could regulate growth along the road within its limits, it had no control over the Coweta County length of the road that abutted the city. Developers quickly saw opportunities to heavily build along the Coweta portion of the road, and Coweta offered no zoning assurances to protect Peachtree City from adjacent overdevelopment.
As a result of those plans, Steve said in a March 2004 letter to the editor, “The creation of the TDK Extension is purely for developmental purposes, not traffic relief,” and in November he called the developer special interest claims of the extension being “a bypass which would reduce traffic on Highway 54” the “relief valve myth.” The Citizen reported the following month that Brown was “vehemently opposed” to moving forward with the TDK Extension.
The Newnan Times-Herald editorial board, in a December 2004 issue, compared Brown to Alabama Governor George Wallace standing in the doorway blocking integration while saying he was the “lone holdout in the new road talks.”
Former mayors of Peachtree City and the leadership of the Chamber of Commerce all lambasted Brown for taking a stand against the TDK Extension. By October of 2005, Brown’s predecessor, a very frustrated Bob Lenox, said that everyone from Congressman Lynn Westmoreland down to every local councilperson knew Brown “personally stonewalled this [TDK] project.”
Lenox continued, “It is not often in government that you can clearly find the culprit when things go wrong, but in this case every one of us who has worked for years to make TDK Boulevard a reality knows that Steve Brown stopped it.”
Harold Logsdon campaigned in favor of the TDK Extension and displaced Brown as mayor in 2004. Soon, however, after massive development plans were filed in Coweta, groups like the Peachtree City Civic Association joined in the movement to kill the expansion, and by June of 2007, the road project was officially dead and Fayette County returned the $200,000 to the city.
In the January 2008 PTC Update newsletter, Mayor Harold Logsdon, an enthusiastic supporter of the extension said, “Two years ago I campaigned on the need for TDK.” He continued, “Well, the situation changed with the proposed massive development on our border, so I changed my position. Completing TDK is not in the best interest of PTC and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.”
Had Brown not had the courage to take a stand with everyone railing against him, we would have the TDK Extension, a massive development next to us, and traffic jams worse than any we can imagine. Steve Brown had taken a whole lot of heat, but it turns out that the lone holdout was right.
Tennis Center — The other issue that special interests target Brown for is the tennis center and development authority scandal. Like the TDK issue, Brown took a stand against what he thought was wrong and was not in the best interest of PTC: loose (and sometimes non-existent) accounting records, failure to record meeting minutes and borrowing funds without public votes.
Following Brown’s efforts, The Citizen editor Cal Beverly said in an in-depth November 2005 public blog that “Those community leaders ran the old DAPC out of their back pockets. They kept precious few records, despite being required to by state law. Several of them served on the board of directors of either a lending bank or a bidding contractor.”
Beverly condemned the DAPC’s performance saying, “If they had performed the same way on their day jobs, they would have been justifiably terminated.” He concluded, “There is no recorded vote on more than a million dollars in loans to the DAPC. There’s no paperwork financial trail to determine where that money went. How can any reasonable person praise this old board?”
Many of the people who defended the DAPC were mortified to learn that three of the DAPC members were on the board of directors of the bank issuing under-the-table high interest, short-term loans to the DAPC.
A September 2005 article appearing in The Citizen entitled, “Mayor slams DAPC board members’ bank ties,” DAPC member and bank board member Doug Warner admitted he should not have voted on the loans due to a conflict of interest. “If that’s evil, then I’m sorry. Take me to task for it,” Warner said.
The DAPC members resigned in shame. Steve Brown, the lone holdout, was proven right again.
I’d add one footnote. Being a senior leader on the people’s side of high profile issues distinguishes a public servant from a politician. That’s why I’m voting for Steve Brown for Fayette County commissioner, Post 4.

A Final Thought
I’ve learned a lot over the last few years of my life. One of the main things I’ve learned is who I can count on when it comes to getting down in the trenches and fighting for a cause. Some folks will get down in the mud and help the cause and some folks just walk away. Some folks will look over their shoulder but others don’t even look back..
Steve Brown and Allen McCarty have said from the beginning of this campaign that their concerns are with the citizens of Fayette County. They have voiced those concerns many times.
From the very beginning, Steve Brown has taken a lot of mudslinging. In the face of much ugliness, he has continued to state documented facts. That hasn’t been the case with the opposing incumbents.
Steve Brown has never abandoned the trenches. It got pretty dirty down here, but he stayed the course. He continued to address questions in the blogs. His opponent didn’t do that. Even though folks were ugly to him, he continued to personally and publicly answer questions and clarify matters. His opponents didn’t do that.
Steve Brown and Allen McCarty are good men to have in the trenches.
It was Steve Brown who told us about Jack Smith's plans to bring Mass Transit into Fayette County. Jack Smith said it wasn't so, but Steve Brown looked up Smith's voting record with the Regional Transportation Board. Smith voted in favor of the Mass Transit Plan into Fayette County 3 times. He said he wouldn't but he did. Mayor Ken Steele voted in favor of turning Fayetteville into a transit bus hub. Just another one of Smith's deceptions.
Smith has been pushing the West Fayetteville Bypass without any detailed traffic studies. He has been pushing it even though our tax money will have to pay almost a million dollars in mitigation for impacting our streams and wetlands. Who know how many millions will have to be paid for right of way acquisition along homeowners property. Jack Smith, Eric Maxwell and the county engineers said they wouldn't/couldn't buy folks property before they had obtained the Federal 404 Permit to build the road. All the while they were saying that, they had already bought some property on Janice Drive and promised other folks SWEET DEALS for their property. There goes out tax money. There goes another lie/deception.
After making plans for all of the 2004 SPLOST money, Jack, Eric and the rest of the fabulous five started making noise about another SPLOST. Before the 2004 SPLOST had ended, they asked the voters for another $135,000,000. The thing about the 2009 SPLOST was that Lee Hearn had to admit to a group of citizens that he commissioners had not even seen the Wish List of that tax until about 30 minutes before they voted to implement the Resolution. Will this list never end?
No. Jack Smith said that the Bank of Georgia was not a developer's bank, but Pat Shepherd said that it was for builders and developers in Fayette and Coweta Counties. Jack Smith said that there were only 2 developers on the Board of Directors for the BOG. However, in a search of the Secretary of State's Office we found that 8 out of the 11 members are directly tied to development. If you count Jack Smith in his capacity of controlling zoning and land use for the county, there are 9 members of the Board of Directors for the Bank of Georgia.
Now, we come to the ethics question. It is a direct conflict of interest for Jack Smith to sit on the Board of a developers bank and also be responsible for zoning and land use in Fayette County.
Jack Smith accepted an expensive first class trip from the Sany Corporation. He granted huge tax breaks to the Corporation and then was treated to a luxurious trip to China by the same corporation.
Jack Smith's Bank of Georgia position and his acceptance of a luxurious trip to China are ethically questionable.
PLEASE REMEMBER ALL OF THE ABOVE WHEN YOU GO TO VOTE TOMORROW.
Several of the Smith supporters on this site have been saying the Brown supporters (I include myself in that group this time around) don't say anything about Brown's record as mayor.
One of them posted such a comment under this very letter to the editor, the one that describes what Brown did as mayor!
The Smith supporters are out wandering in the desert. You can't back Smith or Maxwell without supporting the West Fayetteville Bypass, MARTA buses in Fayette and sales tax increases.
At this very minute, Eric Maxwell has applied for a judicial post at the same time he is running for the county commission. Jack Smith won't quit the developer bank board which conflicts with his government land use and zoning duties. I don't know how you get behind all of that.
They can hate on Steve Brown all they want but the fact is he stood up to Smith and Maxwell and he opposes the road to nowhere and the buses and the sale tax increases.
SHOW YOUR DISPLEASURE WITH THE CHOICE OF COMMISSIONER, IGNORE BROWN AND SMITH, IF IN FACT THAT'S THEIR REAL NAMES, WRITE IN BALD CYCLIST FOR COMMISSIONER.
He's been honest and on the mark.
but while you have your head where it is, check him for polyps.
Hutch is immature and making a mockery of the election process. You would be better to not vote at all with this "no choice" protest. You had the choice to run yourself. If the county lacks good choices for the election it only has itself to blame. Voters should get informed and make the best choice they can.....not waste the time of the elections supervisor counting bogus votes!
Then we would not have any idea at all how many people are disgusted with our choices for commissioner, I never said I would make a better commissioner, I said neither of these two are worth a damn, but if it makes you feel better here's a choice for you, vote, don't vote, or kiss my butt.
SHOW YOUR DISPLEASURE WITH THE CHOICE OF COMMISSIONER, IGNORE BROWN AND SMITH, IF IN FACT THAT'S THEIR REAL NAMES, WRITE IN BALD CYCLIST FOR COMMISSIONER.
Hutch generally doesn't say enough for anyone to be able to say he is immature!
He is a "People" person and not an issues person.
Never heard his position on buses---just who might ride them; he is against taxes, but will probably vote for someone who isn't; he had no real stand on avoiding a great depression in 2008 but didn't want the banks and finance companies bailed out and GM and Chrysler saved which surely would have caused an instant depression.
Our founding Fathers were Christians, he thinks. but they were Deists! Christian means Christ--Deists did not believe in the Trilogy--just God.
Hard to figure.
This can be gleaned by what little he says, just as he thinks I am forty people and get blamed for all of them and complains to Cal every chance he gets about those who disagree!
I am a people person, but can be a issue person if need be. You have no idea what I think in regards to religion, but to fill you in, I'm just this side of an atheist, but a little beyond agnostic. You aren't quite 40 people yet, but you have been about 8 or 9 just since the format change, you can change your name, but the anal orifice you are is apparent in your every post. While CCB can check Brown for polyps, you can check yourself, if you know what I mean. I have never complained to Cal about you, in fact a couple of times I have defended you, I believe the mentally slow should have a chance to express themselves too.
Here're a couple of quick ones...
- Yes, he initially supported the TDK extension into Coweta County, then stood up to state, county, and local politicians (along with developers, builders, and bankers) to oppose and stop it when we all discovered the road would inundate us with overwhelming traffic. Even one of his primary antagonizers (Harold Logsdon) ended up publicly siding with Steve's position.
- Exposed the conflict of interest of board members who simultaneously served on the Development Authority of Peachtree City (DAPC) and on the board of the bank that was loaning money at higher than market interest rates to the DAPC. And that the DAPC kept completely inadequate records of financial transactions and meeting minutes.
- Before, during, and after his term as PTC mayor, did not receive any financial benefit resulting from the sale or purchase of city property, zoning or re-zoning decisions, contract awards, or the like.
Compare that to Commissioner Smith, who accepted an extravagant Asian vacation from the Chinese company he granted tax expemtions to; who has given three changing rationales for constructing a $52m road to nowhere (unless you close the GA 74 - I-85 interchange, as Smith has suggested), and attempted to foist a $135m ales tax on us while he simultaneously accumulated a $5m county rainy day fund.
I'll take Steve's warts over Smith's suspect actions...
You’re back peddling Nuk. You’re all about character assassination. It looks like you never read the letter above these posts. Go back and give it a read and you’ll see some of the things Steve Brown did for us a mayor. As the title says, Brown was right.
Ginga1414 has said this time and again, you Smith guys can’t talk about the issues. You know Smith and Maxwell are wrong on the West Fayetteville Bypass, the buses, his free trip to China and the conflict with the bank.
Smith has lied. Read the letters to the editor on this web site. No one is refuting them.
C
I love your post below. You've shown the difference in the quality of content between the Brown side and the Smith side is huge.
The Smith people don't talk about the horrible 2009 SPLOST, the West Fayetteville Bypass or the transit buses (not to mention Smith's gifts in exchange for tax breaks situation).
David Barlow's letter --
I was very surprised by Commissioner Jack Smith’s letter in The Citizen on June 16. Right off the bat, he said that a vote for him “is a vote for sanity in managing your tax resources.” Exactly what definition of “sanity” is he using to describe his actions?
This is the same guy who is building a $50 million road to nowhere with our limited resources (Georgia and federal highway departments found it did not score high enough and was too expensive).
In addition, he tried to dupe us into another SPLOST, taking an additional $135 million out of our wallets for pointless projects they came up with at the last minute. Smith and friends wanted us to throw away a sum equaling over two times our annual budget.
Commissioner Smith, your actions are definitely not my definition of “financial sanity.”
Steve Brown's letter --
Commissioner Jack Smith voted to put mass transit buses in Fayette County. In public, he said he was not going to do it, but he did do it, multiple times. He admitted this on the video.
You will also see where he says [of] the transit plan, “It is not the best plan that I would put together, but I was only one voice in the group.” The other “voices” from Clayton, Henry and Fulton counties told Smith to take the buses and he agreed.
Virgina Allen's letter --
I don’t know who Commissioner Smith is trying to fool by saying the bank is not oriented toward builders and developers. There are many newspaper articles supporting that connection.
In fact, just take a look at some of the board members of the bank: Pat Shepherd, a former board member of sales and marketing of the Mid-West Georgia Homebuilders Association; Donnie H. Russell, owner and president of manufactured housing sales company Parham Industries, Inc. as well as director and part-owner of manufactured home production company Signal Homes; Arlie C. Aukerman, former chairman and president of construction firm A.C. Aukerman; Fayette County Commission Chairman Jack Smith, an elected official who votes on land use and zoning matters; Thomas G. Sellmer, former owner of real estate management and investment company Sellmer Property Management; Vincent M. Rossetti, president of Ravin Homes, Inc. as well as manager of real estate and office management firm MiRome, LLC; and William Robert Hancock, Jr., partner in real estate firm F&H Investment.
You owe it to yourself as an informed voter to read the FDIC’s “Order to Cease and Desist” for Jack Smith’s Board of Directors at www.fdic.gov/bank/individual/enforcement/2009-06-06.pdf. There are a lot of things Commissioner Smith is just not telling you.
Michael Meyer's letter --
Even Eric Maxwell, an attorney and commissioner, was asked the question regarding this issue from Eric Imker at a recent forum: “Can you legally change the allocation of SPLOST money you currently dedicated for the West Fayetteville Bypass? Can you re-direct it to some other SPLOST designated project? That’s just a yes or no question.”
Maxwell: “The answer is yes. Even the Georgia state code regarding bonds allows you to change what was voted on if the purpose stated is no longer necessary or circumstances have changed such that the expenditure of all or part of such bond funds is no longer practicable or feasible. O.C.G.A. & 36-82-4.2 (2008).”
Smith would have you think no with his repeated mantra, “voters mandate,” that we have to build this road to nowhere with no environmental permits and no* state funding because we have no choice.
I can go on and on and on.
Finally I'm glad to see you grew a pair, although you didn't answer the question, I haven't accused either side of slamming, I'm just asking why when one does it it's different then the other side, but in true Brown fashion, you dance around the question and in the end never answer. So be it.
SHOW YOUR DISPLEASURE WITH THE CHOICE OF COMMISSIONER, IGNORE BROWN AND SMITH, IF IN FACT THAT'S THEIR REAL NAMES, WRITE IN BALD CYCLIST FOR COMMISSIONER.
I think the average Brown voter must have an IQ of a Frito if they haven't figured out in the last two months that I am NOT voting for either of the two losers running.
At least your not making a mockery of the election process.
SHOW YOUR DISPLEASURE WITH THE CHOICE OF COMMISSIONER, IGNORE BROWN AND SMITH, IF IN FACT THAT'S THEIR REAL NAMES, WRITE IN BALD CYCLIST FOR COMMISSIONER.
even a blind squirrel finds an acorn sometimes :)
Yeah, yeah, yeah :) I'm just ready for the votes to be counted and to see all the howling about how the world as we know it is going to end late tomorrow evening, no matter the outcome.
Maybe you can answer this, Steve wouldn't, why when you and he slam Smith it's character assassination, but when you and he do it, it's just campaigning?
SHOW YOUR DISPLEASURE WITH THE CHOICE OF COMMISSIONER, IGNORE BROWN AND SMITH, IF IN FACT THAT'S THEIR REAL NAMES, WRITE IN BALD CYCLIST FOR COMMISSIONER.
Steve Brown and Allen McCarty are not land developers, do not build along WFB, do not have political ties to anyone who does and in general, are not connected to any special interest groups that do. They will represent the citizens of Fayette County honestly and openly. That's all we can ask for.
GOD BLESS AMERICA AND GOD BLESS FAYETTE COUNTY!!
I agree that for government to work for the people, it must work with the people. Fayette County government used to work until Maxwell and Smith got in. It's unfortunate, but they just haven't identified themselves with mainstream Fayette County. Otherwise, they would be responsive to what the majority wants as opposed to what the few want. They would make some attempt to get into the details of those issues which have so, so many times been brought to their attention. Brown and McCarty will make a difference in the people's wishes being heard.
If you're voting on the issues and the best interest of the county, Steve Brown and Allen McCarty are the way to go.
The Brown haters are doing their dead-level best tonight with the character assassinations, but they can't complete on the issue either.
Which one of them are going to say that the bypass and the buses are a good idea?
That's the ENTIRE blueprint of every Steve Brown and his supporters campaign!
Where are all the posts about all the great things Brown did as Mayor for 4 years in PTC? I haven't seen ANY! I have heard the gross distortions about how he "killed" TDK when he didn't, the excuses about why he was totally against it before being elected, then totally for it, then totally against it.
Oh yeah, there is the district voting issue where he slammed the hell out of everyone opposed to it and now takes a complete 180 and doesn't admit ever that "hey, I was totally wrong and maybe shouldn't have ripped into those opposed like a 10 year old." Has he ever said "I was wrong?" NO.
Yeah, the day that Brown and his sheeple campaign on Brown's track record instead of trying to bury the opponent might be the day that the same is returned to them. Brown initiated all of this years ago and has continued ever since, which has lead to landslide losses the last two elections and likely heading for three-strikes-you're-out.
If Brown wants to get elected to some public office, he had better pack it up and move because he blew up every bridge in FC long ago and has shown no clue whatsoever about rebuilding them.
EDIT: I left out the fact that almost every single post from the Browniacs crowd calls Smith a liar and worse. Yet, you are worried about some kind of character assassinations on Brown? There are a lot of people who would have voted against Smith if someone better was running against him. As it is, Cyclist will get a few votes, Smith will get a LOT, and Brown will get beaten like a rented mule.
Unfortunately fences were 'built' long before anyone in this discussion was born. Fences built based on hate and ignorance are coming down - and allowing the true meaning of freedom and democracy to become a reality not only in our country but throughout the world. Discussion based on issues and strongly held personal convictions are instructional. Discussion based on personal belittlement is a waste of time and energy. I hope that the country is listening closely to those who profess to lead.
Now maybe Washington will read it and we'll hear less hate speech; hate speech about high-productivity earners and private businesses who provide the greatest majority of us with jobs.
Maybe less hate speech and fewer belittling jeers about those who promote personal responsibility, less government, and more individual freedom.
Maybe more kept promises about transparent legislative processes, instead of midnight and Christmas Eve backroom dealings. And putting proposed legislation on the internet for us to review and comment on for five days before it's signed into law.
Maybe ...
I completely agree with all you've said. I truly believe we are going to see a better than usual number of voters who vote in Primary Elections. I am basing that statement on all the comments folks are writing here and the number of thumbs up and honks we have been receiving from our flag and sign waving.
"Maybe" as Bob says we will find that folks are sick and tired of what the process has become. If we just keep on telling folks that they can make a difference by educating themselves on all issues and voting, we have a chance to turn our country, state and county around. I think everyone wants our government to be better. However, as I've said before, "more isn't better." I'm voting for "better."
VOTE FAYETTE COUNTY VOTE. TOMORROW IS THE DATE. VOTE
I am so hopeful you are right!!! How long does it take for returns to show in local elections? Can't wait!!
Maybe if ALL of us would acknowledge some of the positives that have happened in the last 10 years - some progress could be made. Our country, as well as our world has undergone some 'rough' times based on lack of ethics, vision, and morality on both sides of the aisle in our Congress and the leadership of US corporations . . . . but we're still here - and moving ahead. . through the good will and tenacity of the American people. Midnight and Christmas Eve backroom dealing is not new to national politics or local politics. ..however now far more transparent than our national and local leaders are smart enough to acknowledge. The only way that the American people can truly take back our power from corrupt and greedy politicians is for more than 40% of eligible voters to participate in both the primary and November elections. It's difficult finding an honest leader these days. .politics in the US has become a nasty process where few ethical men and women care to become participants. Sad. It would be refreshing to find a candidate who had no dirty laundry to air – then one could deal with differences of ‘issues’ or ‘solutions to problems’. Of course, when any potential leader becomes a threat to the status quo – the ‘image’ makers or destroyers are hard at work with ‘image breakers’ – not bothering to base their attacks on ‘truth’. The idea of not cooperating with a leader that did not receive our vote regardless of the need for cooperation in order to progress is a losing/destructive strategy that many in our country are ready to reject. Those too far to the left and too far to the right will realize that in order to solve problems and move ahead, compromise is needed among intelligent persons who will look at the problems and if a strategy is not working, can make adjustments to insure success for the American people. Honest stones can be thrown at both Democrats and Republicans. Those who are hurt are the American people. Let's stop throwing stones and get to work cooperating for the future. Our enemies rejoice that we are talking about separating our 'united' states. We're being destroyed from within - through the mistrust and old lines of division and hatred.
Obama is out there blaming Republicans for his own FAILURES again.
There are plenty of unspent funds in his worthless "stimulus" program to fund unemployment benefits.
Republicans just want him and his bleeding heart liberal minions to follow the "Paygo" (pay as you go) law that the DEMOCRATS passed that states that any new spending must be funded through tax increases or reduced spending.
THIS IS A LAW THAT THE DEMOCRATS PASSED.
But no, Obama would rather that people in need not receive extended employment benefits. Obama would rather use the unemployed to politicize the whole thing by blaming Republicans for following the DEMOCRAT passed Paygo law.
Obama cares nothing about America or its citizens. He cares only about power. If he truly cared about the unemployed he would use "stimulus" funds to extend their benefits. But no, he doesn't care.
Barack Obama is a worthless FAILURE. He has FAILED America and will be out of a job in 2012. Bet on it.
Let's see what more we can do to get out more than 40% of the local voters
Many tried. Too many county residents stated, "What election?" SAD! I'm hoping I just didn't contact the right people!! We'll know soon.
District voting is dead either way, I will not support it. However, I think term limits have a very good chance of passing. The responses I have gotten from the citizens numbering in the hundreds from all over the county is 100 percent in favor.
Peachtree City has had term limits for over a decade.
Thanks for answering my question concerning district voting.
What is the process for establishing term limits?
Don't get me wrong,I agree with your stand for term limits. However, term limits don't mean we have to stop paying attention. Look at Harold Logsdon, for example. Logsdon was so counter to what is good about Peachtree City he almost destroyed the place. There were a lot of uninformed votes in that election.
every elected office should have them.
If you proposed term limit plan fails, what will be your position on district voting?
A simple reply would be appreciated.
life, since Robert W. Morgan hasn't responded to you, I will. No, I am not Steve Brown and I am not a "character."
I am a human being. You have called me a "character." Others have called me Eric Maxwell's "bucket lady."
Thank you, Doug.
You guys obviously haven't been to the county commission meetings. Bob Ross and Ginga Smithfield have spoken at commission meetings numerous times and have written many letters to the editor (all on this web site).
Get back to the real issues.
Get a life guys.
I'm not on here frequently to always know the players so tell me; this Ginga character, that's got to be Steve Brown, right?
This is one of the best LTE's I've ever read. It tells it like it is. Mr. Ross is right. Nobody can argue with Steve Brown's accomplishments because he can prove anything he says. The negative posts are mostly soreheads who have no data to back up what they say. Brown is a straight shooter whom I predict will beat Developer Jack. Heaven help us if he doesn't!
For those of you who haven't been there, visit the McCarty website at www.allenmccarty.net and the Steve Brown website at www.sb4faycom.com. There, you will find a great deal of information on the two new candidates. Steve Brown has explained all the big issues brought about by the campaign in great detail.
You can make your vote count on line. Go to www.splostpoll.com and cast your vote for commissioners or school board.
The Republican Primary is the election...GO VOTE!
I just love to watch all of the local incumbents huddling together in their pathetic attempt at telling us "we really didn't mean it." Like the BOE's Terri Smith, it was all just a paperwork error.
You can only stab the voters in the back for so long before they stab in return. I'm glad people are waking up and not accepting the same crappy stuff from government.
The local Democrats like David's Mom are what is killing this country. For them the grass is always greener on the socialist side of the fence.
Don't blame 'local Democrats' for what is happening in Fayette County - it's all on you Republicans - and you can't get along with yourselves. Sad. Maybe if some 'fences' were taken down, and people/citizens started working together for our country - we'd see some meaningful change. What the last national election said loud and clear - THIS STATUS QUO HAS GOT TO GO!
Obama built the first fence with his "I won" comment on day 1.
He has been the most divisive "president" in recent history. He isn't interested in building bridges with the Republicans as he tears them down every chance he gets. He doesn't want their opinion or input on anything - he just wants them to rubber-stamp every one of his proposals without comment, and then accuses them of being the party of now when they don't go along.
Obama is nothing but a very immature little man that can't take it when other people disagree with his policies.
He is a misrable failure and has failed to lead this country, and then blames it all on Bush and the Repulicans.
How pathetic
There was just "so much" needing done after 16 years of Bushes, 8 years of Reagan and more than Clinton could possibly correct in 8 years, that he has to move fast.
Doesn't a whole passel of 60-40 votes (or therabout) indicate anything to you?
As Boehner said, "hell no."
Not a single republican thought that there were any crooks on Wall Street or in banks and financial houses! Last week they said no (all 40 of them- 40) that no regulation was needed.
That is like saying: go ahead oil companies start drilling thousands more deep water oil wells tomorrow! Sheer stupidity---hoping for hard-head votes!
How can you possibly craft sweeping financial reform to preclude another recession and omit from that same proposal any additional oversight or control of Fannie & Freddie?
They played a pivotal role by providing a dumping ground for housing loans that would never have seen the light of day had the greedy banks not been able to quickly offload them onto Freddie & Fannie.
Kinda like illegal drugs: if there's no market for the junk, it won't be produced and peddled. The federal government provided the market and the crooks came out of the woodwork.
On the local, county level, the issues are rarely Democratic or Republican. Everyone in Fayette County can get a feel for the West Fayetteville Bypass and pork projects in the proposed 2009 SPLOST.
I got into my race on the last evening of qualifying because no one signed up to challenge the status quo. I am encouraged that people are starting to wake up and I hope they vote on July 20.
the trend is sustained trhough the November general election
That cinched it! I'll vote for Brown! Thanks for all of the conversation and information regarding the election.
.......your saying suddenly that you will now vote for Brown. I assumed long ago that he had your vote locked up!
You should have said "just another reason for me to vote for him!"
Frankly, it is simply whether you want a moderate republican or a right wing republican!
You are one ugly mouthed individual. UUUGLY! You don't speak for the rest of us.
I thought you were talking about David's Mom and was about to congratulate you.
DM doesn't speak for the rest of us either.
Did someone fart or was that David's Mom yapping away with her nonsense again? It's hard to tell the difference.
It is also the same Doug Warner who has contributed to our incumbents' campaign funds. It is the same Doug Warner who has negotiated West Fayetteville Bypass right-of-way deals between homeowners and county officials.
Wow, Doug Warner really gets around. He's got his fingers in just about as many pies as Jack Smith. Sooner or later, these folks just might stick their fingers in the wrong pie.
Doug Warner might as well handle the by-pass paperwork as anyone--he doesn't even have to be for or against it (but he is for it).
Now as to wrong pies----he did his share of that didn't he with a certain bank and recreational facility? They thought they were doing what was best for us regardless of the legal, slightly gray areas. About battleship color gray!
I consider Doug one of the most principled lawyers around here.....there may not be over one or two.
:)
Isn't this former DAPC-bank board member the same guy we just read about last week, for emailing false smear information about Board of Education candidate Bob Todd?
How does he retain his law license after yet another bout of unethical behavior? How does he shave in the morning? How do friends and family tolerate him?
Let's see, do I know any lawyer jokes that rhyme with 'Warner'...
Neither of them pay any local taxes.
We lose. :(
What have you done for the community?
I would like to refer you to www.sb4faycom.com and www.allenmccarty.net also www.drbobtodd.com
): researching.
He brought us the FAA facility and the National Weather Service to PTC. What did you do to help, citizen bob?
... Warner's role was in the federal government's approval of siting those operations in PTC, but expect it involved a lot more people than Mr. Warner.
And I suspect many were more ethical.
The PTC airport (Atlanta Regional now) was supported heavily by taxes collected by the old DAPC, and still is from what we have there now.
You might want to see who has interests at the airport also. Who owns planes and are pilots? Blind use of power by those who feel special is nothing new! Even Judges (many) are that way.
This is one of the reason much of the world sees many of the USA Capitalists as hypocrites and crooks. It has gone on since the 19th and 20th century robber Barons operated. Rockefeller's, Morgans, Firestone's, Duponts, etc., made such things famous.
... with these issues right now, but PTC airport may well be worth a look just a little later (you'll have to enlighten me a bit more on details).
Not sure capitalism is as much to blame for economic ills as CRONY capitalism: too many politician-enabled sweetheart deals that distort true capitalism. Example: Delta's stronghold on routes into & out of Hartsfield-Jackson, to the detriment of Southwest Airlines- whose rate competition under truer capitalism would benefit the public.
Cheers
There is absolutely nothing wrong with regulated capitalism! We quit regulating it starting with Reagan! Crooks flourish under such.
.. regulating health insurance to preclude competition across state lines?
That's the kind interference that causes major distortions. Compare it to term life insurance, where open competition (across the country) and availability of comparative coverage & prices has DRASTICALLY reduced costs to consumers.
And you didn't address the political regulation to prohibit competitive airlines into Atlanta...
about Commissioner Smith. Jack Smith hasn't so much as "coughed" without our sleuth Brown checking it out. Steve Brown has uncovered the "truth" about Smith. Smith is narcissistic, my choice of word to describe him, and is only interested in his personal financial gain. There is no other explanation why he would remain on the Board of Bank of Georgia. A real "Man of Integrity" would explain himself, ask for forgiveness from his Fayette County constituents, and resign from either the commission or the Bank Board. He certainly should not have accepted the position in the first place. I suspect Smith is a RINO because he is acting like most leftists Democrats.
Fayette County Voters, regardless what you think about my remarks, please "GO VOTE". I'm a Vietnam Veteran and understand our Democratic Republic well. It is your duty to go vote.
GOD BLESS AMERICA AND GOD BLESS FAYETTE COUNTY!
You have to respect Brown for effectively defending his position with DDF, (details, documentation, and facts). I have yet to see anyone actually prove Steve Brown wrong in terms of presenting conflicting documentation. Generally, all they're doing is changing the subject, in retreat from their earlier comments.
Being a commissioner is a detailed job. Do you really want to retain the same crowd who has no documented defense of actions they've taken on major issues? Take a look at what the incumbents have done: the West Bypass, rapid rail (bringing crime into Fayette County), and exempting their appointed employees from written performance evaluations under the same standards as other County employees. Steve Brown and Allen McCarty are my choice. But BEFORE you make your next comment, positive or negative, at least do both candidates the courtesy of visiting their websites. Steve Brown's website address is www.sb4faycom.com, and Allen McCarty's is www.allenmccarty.com. I guarantee that by doing this, you will be making a much more informed candidate choice, whether you vote for Brown and McCarty, or the incumbents,
Above all, get out and vote in the July 20th primary election...because it's all over after that date...not because I told you to, but because of what you'll get if you don't.
Saw a couple of paragraphs on candidate Brown's website (sb4faycom.com) under the Vision page (point #9) where he discussed his stance on this issue that's important to many voters
My original thought on district voting was the citizens residing in our cities were not being adequately represented at the county level. The majority of the population in Fayette County lives in cities. There were several problems, chief amongst them city dwellers were being taxed by the county for services they were not receiving.
Even the incumbent, Jack Smith, agreed the problem existed, and did make one moderate change by making the necessary legislative adjustments so that Peachtree City residents no longer had to pay for county fire and EMS services which were not provided within the city limits. (Note: A reversal occurred when the County Commission approved the 2009 SPLOST referendum asking for countywide sales taxes to pay for new county fire and EMS infrastructure. The SPLOST failed handily.)
Today, with the advent of the Tea Party movement and cries for major change from “government as usual,” which certainly perked my interests, we may end up with a more representative government anyway. Entrenched incumbents are being voted out all over the country.
I received a lot of negative feedback from local citizens related to district voting, so I dropped it. (Everyone wishes Smith and Maxwell would be so receptive of the overwhelming cries of the public against the West Fayetteville Bypass.)
My new solution for keeping entrenched special interests and their politicians out of the common good’s way is to change the county’s charter to include term limitations for all elected county commission posts. I believe term limitations will accomplish the same goal and be more universally accepted.
So I think a term limitation set at two terms would be just as effective and there would be no need to consider district voting. I have run this idea by a couple of hundred voters and they love the idea.
I have dropped district voting for good. Everybody likes the term-limits idea better and I think it will work.
Entrenched, “life-long” elected officials tend to become jaded and often develop relationships that lead to corrupt practices. Congress is the perfect example of just how bad things can get!
Term limits give the Board of Commissioners a built-in balance of continuity and turnover, allowing passive, ineffective, or troublesome commission members to be more easily rotated off.
Term limits also create a regular infusion of fresh ideas and new perspectives in the Board of Commissioners.
Term limits also create a regular awareness of the county’s status and produces innovation through changing group dynamics.
The current Mayor of Peachtree City seems to be a great guy. He even comments to folks in the Citizen. Imagine that. Fayette County actually has a public official who will respond to all us lowly citizens. How wonderful! If I lived in Peachtree City I would certainly have voted for Mayor Haddix.
Now, if we can just elect Steve Brown commissioner, we will have two public officials who will respond to the lowly citizens.
Thank you Steve Brown, Allen McCarty and Mayor Don Haddix for living and working with the people. After all, aren't we "off the people, by the people and for the people?" Steve Brown, Allen McCarty and Mayor Don Haddix are REAL PEOPLE.
Okay, Fayette County, GO VOTE FOR TWO MORE REAL PEOPLE. BUT MAKE SURE YOU VOTE BEFORE OR ON JULY 20TH BECAUSE IF WE DON'T, WE'LL BE STUCK WITH PSEUDO-PEOPLE. Advance voting begain on July 12th -July 16th at the Tyrone and Peachtree City Libraries from 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM daily. HURRY TO THE POLLS AND AVOID THE CROWDS. BUT WHATEVER YOU DO, VOTE BY JULY 20TH. THIS IS A PRIMARY ELECTION AND IT WILL ALL BE DECIDED ON JULY 20TH. WE CAN'T WAIT UNTIL NOVEMBER'S GENERAL ELECTION. THAT WILL BE TOO LATE TO PROTECT OUR COUNTY FROM THE DEVELOPERS, MASS TRANSIT AND FUTURE SPLOST.
Steve - I hate to disagree with you since I've made up my mind to vote for you, but.... Your position on district voting is still a bit of a question with me. Have you unequivacolly dropped district voting or have you shelved district votiog in favor of term limits becoming a reality? If term limits does not happen, then what? Do you go back to endorsing district voting? I'm looking for a definitive answer on this subject.
That being addressed, let me say to the rest of the contributors here that I have lived in PTC 25 years now and Steve Brown was, by far and away, the best Mayor PTC had seen in the time before the present administration. I do feel that the current mayor and council are doing an outstanding job in these tryng times.
Check out the Vision page, then scroll down to point #9. Brown discusses his stance there.
Here is the letter to the Citizen published in 2008 where Brown states just how great district voting is and how neanderthal(and racist) anyone is who opposes it. Sounds like a press release for the NAACP and Democrats:
It appears we are going to see a few of the Smith bloggers throw out some innuendo at the eleventh hour. I made this point on district voting in at least five other blogs.
I put it below, but if you do want the West Fayetteville Bypass, sales tax increases and transit buses, you should stick with your incumbent.

People of Fayette County, read this link, this is the words of the crazy man you want as a County Commissioner. I read this past vomit that Brown wrote. He is for District Voting, like all good snake oil sales men he wants you to watch the hand that says term limit and when that fails he will be right back at wanting to have District Voting. He has not come out and said no for a reason. This guy is a nut case.
That I asked him a question after this letter and in true Steve Brown fashion, if he can't support his position, he ignores the responses. Come on Steve, man up, answer some questions.
But here's where the current position is expressed- sb4faycom.com
See it on the Vision page, point #9.
It's Browns previous statements on District voting that made me vote against him.
We need to keep at large voting in place - the counties that adopted district voting are full of thugs and are dysfunctional.
I had an opportunity to meet Steve Brown. I was very favorably impressed with his knowledge of Fayette County issues. It is sad to see his competitors try and discredit him by manipulating the facts. When Mr. Brown found out about the impact of development on TDK, he did something about it. This guy is a straight shooter, and other people who actually know him that know me tell me the same thing. He's got my vote.
Please check out the documented facts that Steve Brown and Allen McCarty have provided for us.

Mr. Ross you did a great job highlighting these triumphs for the citizens. Steve Brown proved he's not afraid to stand alone if he has to when it's time to take a stand.
Way To Go, D and Mrs. D. I have a good feeling that there will many more who vote as you did.
Please check out all the facts by researching the issues for yourself. For more information concerning Candidates Brown and McCarty visit their websites at www.sb4faycom.com and www.allenmccarty.net.
And, PLEASE whatever you do GO VOTE DURING THE PRIMARY ELECTION. Advance voting began on July 12th - July 16th at the Tyrone and Peachtree City Libraries from 8:00 AM-5:00 PM daily. If you miss those dates, please vote on July 20th without fail. July 20th Primary Election Date is the DETERMINING FACTOR this year. If you wait until the November General Election, it will be too late to save Fayette County from rampant development, mass transit and future SPLOST Resolutions.
My wife and I recently moved to Fayetteville from MS. As a Certified Legal Video Specialist I always volunteer to videotape local events. Video displayed to a Jury needs no explanation. "The video speaks for itself", is the comment made by the Judge prior to the showing of the video evidence.
I videotaped the County Commission forum held at Christ's Church at Whitewater and posted the video on our website www.tbfaco.com for all to see. You may also view the one man forum of Dr. Bob Todd if you wish.
Having no previous experience regarding the County Commissioners my wife and I have carefully followed any and all comments made by the commission candidates. In addition, we viewed the commissioners forum multiple times. I am in the process of producing videotaped remarks made by Eric Maxwell and Jack Smith that will prove they were not forthright and honest. The video and supporting documents will be posted and I encourage the public to perform their own due diligence. Remember folks, "But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment." Matthew 12:36. I am ready to stand before God and give an account of my words written here today.
SPQR, check out the facts.

Stress played a large part in my answer to you. That is not an escuse, just an explanation. My post to you was very inappropriate and I truly apologize. Citizen Bob is quite right. Your question was very important and deserves an answer. I know, without a doubt, that Steve Brown would welcome the opportunity of responding to you personally. His email address is stevebrownfayette@gmail.net I hope you understand and will forgive this somewhat addled human being.
Read the letter above and you'll know when Steve Brown tells you he's going to stop the West Fayetteville Bypass he'll do it.
