TDK Extension, W. F’ville Bypass similar examples of deception

Do you remember when the TDK Extension was touted to be an answer to traffic congestion in Peachtree City?

The West Fayetteville Bypass has been touted to be an answer to traffic congestion by some of the very same people who wanted the TDK Extension.

Just like the mega developments on the Coweta County side of the TDK Extension, there are more than several large developments connected to open land along the West Fayetteville Bypass.

Among others, one of the major developers owning land along the West Bypass is John Wieland.

The old Peachtree City mayors claimed the TDK Extension was in the best interest of Peachtree City just like commissioners Smith and Maxwell do for the bypass.

If the TDK Extension had been built, the amount of humanity and traffic that would have been dumped into Peachtree City and Tyrone would have shut down Ga. Highway 74, causing heavy traffic and gridlock.

If the almost 2,000 acres of developer land along the West Bypass comes to fruition, there will only be more traffic in Fayetteville because the bypass doesn’t go anywhere. The comparisons of the West Fayetteville Bypass to the TDK Extension are extremely close.

On both road projects, the public discovered that special developer interests were behind them. In Peachtree City, the Peachtree City Civic Association (PTCCA), a group of neighborhood associations, led the fight against the TDK Extension.

On Oct. 26, 2009, The West Fayetteville Bypass Coalition (WFBC) filed a letter of intent to sue Fayette County through the environmental law firm of Stack and Associates.

The PTCCA and citizens of Peachtree City got Mayor Logsdon to back down on the TDK Extension.

On July 16, 2009, The Citizen published an interview with Jack Smith. In a power move against the WFBC, Smith was quoted as saying, “Voters approved the [West Fayetteville] bypass in the last SPLOST. The money is there. The only thing that can stop that project from moving forward now is a court order.”

Commissioner Smith essentially said he is ramming this project down our throats whether we want it or not.

The Fayette and Coweta chambers of commerce jointly passed a resolution asking elected officials to ensure that the extension of TDK Boulevard remains a priority, and that they continue to work jointly to extend the road without delay. They were trying to pull the wool over our eyes. As we know now, the TDK Extension was never about traffic relief.

Now we have the same games being played with the West Fayetteville Bypass. The bypass is a road for the developers courtesy of our tax dollars.

Jack Smith has no proof the West Fayetteville Bypass will solve any traffic problem, but he is on the board of a bank that lends heavily to developers. The only way to make our dictatorial Commission chairman terminate this misuse of our tax dollars is to vote him out of office on July 20.

Just like the battle was won against building the TDK Extension, we can do the same with the West Fayetteville Bypass. There has never been a better time to vote the incumbents out of office.

WFB and TDK

I just received an email from one of the smartest people I know and I would like to share just one paragraph from his letter.

"The primary problem with the WFB is and always has been, that there has never been a common-sense answer to why this road was being placed where it is. Especially since the North end does not get drivers to anyplace in particular. Fayette County, from the start, has said they are trying to resolve traffic problems in downtown Fayetteville. Calling a new road a bypass doesn't make it so. The planning must demonstrate how it will accomplish traffic relief. If the purpose is something other than what the citizens of this county have been told, then let that be explained."

However, Jack Smith refuses to answer any specific questions concerning the Bypass.

Goto the polls on July 20th and vote. November will be too late.

No, Mudcat...

Just saying that the I didn't see anything resembling a 'Smith mandate' in the numbers. Obviously some voters thought he was 'da man', or they wouldn't have come to the polls a second time.

This election, I'd like to see:
- A large turnout of informed, concerned voters
- A clear mandate for the county's direction forward

See you at the polls!

Election results

Mr. Smith almost never made it past the 2006 primary- garnering a mere 29% of votes vs Linda Wells' 48% (Sam Chapman took the remaining votes, per county web site). Had Wells captured another 194 votes in that primary (out of 11,445), we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

In the subsequent runoff election, about half of Wells' supporters assumed she would prevail and stayed home; Smith supporters and a handful of Chapman voters defeated her.

But what's done is done. Read the issues and vote.

Mudcat,

After your foray with Harold Logsdon, I would think you know better. This letter is very appropriate Jack Smith's West Fayetteville Bypass is much like Harold Logsdon's TDK extension.

Logsdon sold our city property to developers and Smith is building a road for the developers with our money.

Like Logsdon, Jack Smith dug his own hole and is about to fall in.

So, citizen bob, what your saying is Linda's da man?

If, If, If, she had gotten a couple hundred more votes or if Sam didn't run or if she had actually won - the brown clown would be sitting at home intead of running against Wells? That what you think?

Brownie needs the release of running for office (gets him out of the house, don't you know) and he's going to do very well this time. Like a blind prostitute, you have to hand it to him (or her) for being the energizer bunny of Fayette politics - you go guy!!!

You still lose (68% Smith - 28% Brown), but it was sure entertaining to see you come out again.

I love this statement from Lynn Tolbert, "Jack Smith has no proof the West Fayetteville Bypass will solve any traffic problem, but he is on the board of a bank, Bank of Georgia, that lends heavily to developers. The only way to make our dictatorial Commission chairman terminate this misuse of our tax dollars is to vote him out of office on July 20".

Go to www.sb4faycom.com and watch the videos from the Commissioner forum again. Smith constantly lies throughout the entire video. Smith says, "he doesn't lay his ethics at anyone's door". That's right Jack. You laid them at Fayette County's door. Smith thinks the Fayette County voters are stupid. They voted him in once, they'll surely do it again.

I don't think so Jack.

Saw an interesting compilation of Commissioners Smith's & Maxwell's rationales (excuses?) for the West Fayetteville Bypass:
1. Traffic relief
2. Then "The voters made me do it"
3. Maxwell: "It's cheaper"

Then Fayetteville Mayor Steele announces in last week's paper that "...it's for future development."

So, elected officials, what is last and final answer?

Voter, It makes me wonder, too

We all know that developers and Jack Smith's developer bank are behind the West Fayetteville Bypass. All one has to do is look at the map. Look at all of those wide open tracts of land owned by developers. Look at all the Smith and Maxwell campaign signs plastered outside of the developer's gas stations. No matter what Smith and Maxwell say, they can't hide those big expensive campaign signs. They can verbally twist and manipulate the WFB all they want, but no amount of twisting and manipulating will hide those campaign signs outside the developer's gas stations.

I have decided that the phrase of the day is "Real People." This country is founded upon the phrase, "of the people, by the people, and for the people." "Real People" fervently believe in "of the people, by the people and for the people." Our current incumbent commissioners apparently believe in "of me, by me, and for me." They haven't seen fit to climb down here in the trenches with all the "Real People."

Brown, McCarty and Todd are "Real People." VOTE FAYETTE COUNTY! VOTE FOR BROWN, MCCARTY AND TODD! VOTE ON JULY 20TH. DON'T WAIT FOR THE NOVEMBER GENERAL ELECTION. THAT WILL BE TOO LATE!

The deception concerning these projects ranks up there with Obamacare. What gets me is why someone would raise $72,000 for a job that pays $26,000. My assumption is that there must be benifits well beyond the pay. The politics of lies and dirty tricks is very evident in Fayette County. Give me a reluctant candidate who will serve the people because it is his duty. Someone who can speak of what he has done hosestly. I will take McCarty, Brown and Dodd. Please vote for these common sense conservatives.

Yeah that is stupid for our little county! Should assist the newspaper business however.
My opinion is that Eric will get just as many votes whether he spends the money or not. I am not one to think our citizens are that stupid to vote for the most gifts!
But we must remember that some people are in a position to help certain moneymakers in the county and that their investment each may pay off. Sad, but true.

I'm concerned that at the number of Fayette voters are unaware of the primary, that its county winners will be unopposed in November, issues and their relevance to their taxes, children, home values, and overall quality of life.

Continue to urge all of us to study up, get to the polls, and elect the candidate you believe will best support what's important to you!

You can only pull the wool so many times before people get wise. That's what happened with the TDK, and that's what is happening with the bypass. Each one is a long story that should be told in its entirety. You can get the real facts from Steve Brown's website at www.sb4faycom.com. Before you vote, also visit Allen McCarty's website at www.allenmccarty.net. These will more fully help you understand the positions, philosophies, and accomplishments of both candidates.

Smith not telling the truth on the W. Fayetteville Bypass

Here is the letter I was looking for ... same story with the TDK Extension.

Please do not believe for a second that the West Fayetteville Bypass cannot be stopped. The road project is under total county control because it was so low on function that it could qualify for state/federal funding. All the county has to do is say "no" to phase II.

Think about it. The county had spent $600,000 on the East Fayetteville Bypass when Smith and Maxwell simply stopped and started on the West Fayetteville Bypass (with no public notice or public vote). Smith and Maxwell did, in fact, stop a SPLOST project, but now say they cannot stop the West Fayetteville Bypass. Do not believe them.

This primary election is about the MANDATE of the people. They are going to say "No!" to the West Fayetteville Bypass.

The County Administrator tells the public why the bypass has to go through.
The County Administrator serves at the pleasure of Jack Smith, who conducts oral performance reviews on the County Administrator
The County Administrator wants a good performance review
The County Attorney also gets an oral performance review
The County Attorney also wants a good performance review
Jack Smith says only a court order can stop the bypass
In a published article, the County Administrator says the bypass has to go through
The County Attorney supports the County Administrator's Opinion

It doesn't add up. If anybody can ever get access to the county's policy on performance reviews, it needs to be published. There must be some written reviews on file with a recording of the above two reviews on tape.

The only way to fight this kind of management is to vote incumbents OUT!
Vote for Brown and McCarty, and take back Fayette County.

Amen and Amen, again! I have a friend who is constantly referring to Jack Smith and Eric Maxwell as the "Silver Tongued Duo." They seem to think that they can talk their way out of anything, but it looks like their silver tongues have turned to tin. The voters are sick and tired of taking whatever the "Silver Tongued Duo" spit out and they are going to do something about it.

I could really use my portion of that $600,000 right now. I know it might not seem like much to Jack, Eric and the rest of the fantastic five, but I could really use my portion. If Jack is successful in running the road through my property, he doesn't plan on putting up a fence or any sort of noise abatement other than just whatever might grow there. So, if he builds the infernal road a lot of folks could use their portion of the $600,000 to buy saplings in hopes they will provide some noise abatement sometime in the future. We certainly can't sell our homes now. And, we certainly won't be able to sell our homes if or when the road goes through. You know, CCB, I was thinking about all of this not long ago and I came to the realization that if the county is successful in building Phase II of the Bypass and we come to an agreement as to how much they will pay me for my land, they will be paying me with my own money for my own land. So, I will be paying for my land twice, I will have to give my land to the county and I will be left with cars and trucks running through my back yard. It isn't a pretty picture. However, I'm not the only homeowner faced with that prospect, there are many many more. Having said all of that, I'm sure old Jack and especially Eric probably think I should consider myself fortunate in that, as things stand now, I won't have to be real careful crossing that road with my water bucket. The road was going through our front yard, but now they have moved it to the back yard.

If you are sick and tired of the "Silver Tongued Duo," as I am, please vote on July 20th. This Primary Election will determine our future here in Fayette County. Will we have $50,000,000 roads running through homeowners' property or running directly through the actual home? Will we have elderly people trying to walk to bus stops and carrying groceries from the grocery store back to the bus stop? Will we still have the "Silver Tongued Duo" or will we have someone who tells the truth?

It is our choice. PLEASE VOTE ON JULY 20TH. DON'T WAIT UNTIL NOVEMBER AND THE GENERAL ELECTION. NOVEMBER WILL BE TOO LATE. VOTE ON JULY 20TH.

Jack Smith throwing away more of our money, I'm pissed

Jack Smith is saying he won't do the East Fayetteville Bypass (the road that was the top priority) so he trashed another $600,000 of our tax dollars.

When someone like Smith is so carefree about wasting other people's money is it really a surprise that his bank is found going belly up due to mismanagement?

When Smith infers that $600,000 isn't that much money and we shouldn't worry about it, you need to think about how many useful things can be done those dollars.

We want our $600,000 back, the West Fayetteville Bypass stopped and Smith and Maxwell out!

Hopefully all the Brown and McCarty supporters will vote before or on July 20th. If we don't vote before or on July 20th, we will be stuck with the same old same old.

Steve Brown and Allen McCarty are not the "GO ALONG TO GET ALONG" types that we have become accustomed to. They will fight for what is right. They are fair minded and well qualified men who care about the people of this county.

Imagine having a free road going through 3/4 mile of your property. That's what some developers will get if the WFB goes through. The WFB Coalition actually supported the East Bypass, because that's where all the traffic is. The problem with the West Route is that it serves no common destination, and literally goes around Jones's Barn in getting traffic out of Fayetteville (not that we have any traffic to speak of in Fayetteville). Aside from the lack of need for this road, the county is crossing 8 different wetlands, and the runoff from the road will go straight into the tributaries that feed Whitewater Creek, where Fayetteville gets its drinking water.

Brown is against special interests, and will fight to take back Fayette County for the citizens.

Both are developer welfare projects and luckily TDK was stopped before it was too late.

Exactly, Doug. The facts aren't pretty.

The West Fayetteville Bypass Coalition requested, under the Georgia Open Records Act, documentation of traffic studies and alternative routes that are required by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers when a road crosses streams and wetlands. The county has to obtain a Federal 404 Permit to build a road across streams and wetlands. However, the county could not or would not produce any traffic studies. Now, we have been told by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that the county's 404 Permit application is being detained because required information had not been included in the application.

I am sick and tired of being used and abused by our current commissioners. I have personally been on the receiving end of that use and abuse. Many citizens have been on the receiving end of that use and abuse. If voters want an eye opening experience as to the workings of some of our county officials, just click on YouTube and do a little research into Fayette Co. Commissioners, or West Fayetteville Bypass. The facts aren't pretty.

When Commission Chairman Jack Smith said that the only thing that could stop the WFB was a "court order," he was less than factual. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers can stop the WFB. Why doesn't Chairman Smith discuss the 404 Permit with the public?

Why didn't our Commission Chairman inform the citizens that he had voted in favor of mass transit coming into our county? Why was it that Steve Brown had to dig for that information and write an article on the subject? Why didn't Chairman Smith tell us? Why didn't Chairman Smith ask the citizens of this county if they wanted mass transit before he voted in favor of it?

Right you are. At the recent Town Hall Meeting, when asked how the WFB could relieve traffic congestion, Eric Maxwell stated that the Traffic Engineer said so, then changed the subject. Neither Smith nor Maxwell have any idea how to explain how a road ending at Coleman's Salvage is the answer to Fayetteville's traffic problems. The truth is, the road is only two lanes, and even it had a viable destination, it would be so bogged down with traffic that once anyone had tried it to save time, they would go back to Fayetteville from then on. None of the commissioners can give an intelligent answer to prove that the WFB is a traffic saver because it was built for the developers. But worse yet, they won't divert the WFB money to other SPLOST projects because they don't want to disappoint the developers. They would rather spend your tax money to defend a lawsuit that will be brought against them by the WFB Coalition.
