BoE chair Terri Smith makes $12.2 million ‘oops’ on campaign form

If you were to examine the state-required financial disclosure statements filed 10 months apart in 2008 by Fayette County Board of Education Chair Terri Smith, you would discover a difference.

A $12.2 million difference.

Smith chalked the discrepancies up to “paperwork error.”

Smith said the state financial disclosure statement filed in January 2008 was amended in November of that year after she read a column in The Citizen by former Peachtree City Mayor Steve Brown.

“I did the amendment after I read Steve Brown’s column. It was a mistake on my part,” Smith said. “So when I found the errors I amended (the financial disclosure statement). It was purely a paperwork error and the amendments were done to make the corrections. There was never any attempt to deceive.”

At issue were sections II, V and VIII of the financial disclosure statement that had been amended in November.

Pertaining to Section II (fiduciary positions), Smith in the January 2008 filing noted no fiduciary positions in any business, while the November amendment noted her position as corporate secretary for Action Plumbing in Tyrone. As with the January filing, Smith on the November amendment said she received no monetary fee or honorarium.

Smith on Monday said she had not been aware that she had been made secretary of the corporation. That appointment came after the deaths of her husband’s father and sister.

The January 2008 paperwork for section V (spouse’s direct ownership interests in real property) declared no ownership interests by her husband — a developer — with a fair market value of more than $10,000.

The amended statement in November declared ownership and partial ownership in 35 properties in Georgia, Alabama and Florida with a total estimated worth of $20.515 million. Her husband’s share of those interests, with ownership ranging from 33 percent to 100 percent, totaled $12.247 million.

The final portion of the disclosure that was amended in November was section VIII (known business or investment interests of spouse and dependent children). In her January filing, Smith listed seven businesses while on the November filing she listed 14.

“I’m happy to be held responsible for my mistakes,” Smith said Monday, reiterating that the omissions on the January were mistakes. “I don’t work for or with my husband, so I don’t know who owns what land. In hindsight I should have been more careful.”

Smith went further in her comments to The Citizen. Smith said she would be happy to personally answer questions that anyone might have pertaining to the November 2008 amended financial disclosure. Terri Smith can be reached at 770-542-8273.

Smith was first elected in 2000 and her current term ends in 2012.

and we should trust this woman with our school budget?

Ms. Smith's handling of her personal finances should cause FayCo taxpayers concern. If she doesn't know where her own money is, why would we expect her to be any more careful with ours........

Your're Right About Government As Usual

How in the world were the people of Fayette County stupid enough to vote Terri Smith back into office!!!

It's time to vote the incumbents out and not look back.

Get rid of Terri Smith and government as usual

What a joke! A $12 million paper work error, yeah right.

This is where guys like Steve Brown who expose the cheaters really benefit our community. If you think for a moment Terri was going to tell all on her own, I've got some swamp land I want to sell you.

Thanks For The Laughs, Sugarfoot

Sugarfoot, you and I are kindred spirits. Our good buddy, Sam, got a much needed laugh from your Alice and the rabbit hole scenario. Just like in the Commissioner's race, sooner or later the facts will come out. Thanks to Ben Nelms and the Citizen, parents in Fayette County are becoming aware of the deception and bullying tactics that have been present in the BOE for many years. I implore all Fayette County parents to attend Board of Education Meetings. The above article and BOE meetings give a great deal of insight into the true workings of Terri Smith and Smola. Thanks for the laughs, Sugarfoot. We have all been crying TOO LONG due to the antics of Smith and Smola. They need to follow in Lee Wright's footsteps. And, if they don't, folks in my end of the county are digging another rabbit hole.

Her only defense? I'm so stupid I forgot 12.5 million dollars?

“I don’t work for or with my husband, so I don’t know who owns what land. In hindsight I should have been more careful.”

" Smith in the January 2008 filing noted no fiduciary positions in any business, while the November amendment noted her position as !!??CORPORATE SECRETARY??!! for Action Plumbing in Tyrone. As with the January filing, Smith on the November amendment said she received no monetary fee or honorarium"

"The January 2008 paperwork for section V (spouse’s direct ownership interests in real property) declared no ownership interests by her husband —!!?? A DEVELOPER!!?? — with a fair market value of more than $10,000."

Ok...does anyone realize, or care, that Mr Cave (their choice to run against Dr Todd) worked at the bank that people are talking about as developer friendly, I'm told, as a loan officer...? Does anyone care or realize that the 'Fayette county teacher'that got up and talked so nasty to Dr Todd about not upholding SMith and SMola and the violation to "ethics" was the sister of Smith's development partner in TCG Holdings?

"Purely a paperwork error"

What a complete and total lying sleaze. "Oh golly, I didn't know I had any interest in 20.5 million in properties! Lucky me! My hubby never told me about any of this and tee-hee, sorry."

Yeah Nuk

I misplace 12.5 million in my "underwear drawer" all the time... misplaced money laying all around. I'm sure everyone does in this recession!

It is an insult to the taxpayer that Smith, on the BOE that ..OVERBUILT SCHOOLS... should forget that much money.

She should resign! We could vote for 1 more BOE position just as easy in the upcoming elections...as a matter of fact...we could vote for 2 more positions on the BOE just as well!

Most of us are sick of the 'bar room brawl' antics, then Dr Todd being called on the carpet by the sister of Smith's husband's old developer partner for ethics violations! What balls!

Vote for who?

I actually wrote in Nicole File last election---where is she now? will she run again? Clearly we need to do some purging here---but how in the hell do you convince a majority of our citizens to do that? Surely didn't work last time,.

It should happen now

It would be a good topic for the tea party group. I bet we could find someone some where that wouldn't/couldn't forget 12.5 million.

I think 'Alice' and the 'bar room brawler' got in last time because people went down the line voting their party and not their brain.

I also think the teachers got duped.

I'm still thinking about that 12.5 million dollar 'opps'...

..maybe if she looks in the cookie jar....hmmm..?

Attention to details

Isn't this what we would expect from one of our elected officials?

Or didn't Ms. Smith even review the form?

You can't be appointed a corporate secretary

unless you fill out a form, sign it, have it notarized and file it with the Secretary of State. Someone this stupid (or dishonest) needs to resign from the school board. We need real leadership.

Worst of all she finds out she is a corporate secretary from a Steve Brown letter? Instead of her husband? Are you kidding me.

cmon, what's a few million between husband and wife

Details, details, details. Husbands and wives really don't talk about these silly little financial matters like millions of dollars worth of assets. Cut them some slack.

I guess she had a bad day and fell down the rabbit hole!

"unless you fill out a form, sign it, have it notarized and file it with the Secretary of State."

Yeah, I guess she just didn't know what she was signing? or notarizing? nor did she remember frolicking off to the Secretary of State to file it.

Her name should be 'Alice in Wonderland Smith'
