Fayette eyes office zone for 74S.

A proposal from Fayette County planning staff to designate 15 parcels on Ga. Highway 74 South for future office use will be considered Thursday night by the Fayette County Commission.

The tracts total about 68 acres and each one fronts Hwy. 74 with direct access. Of the parcels, four are undeveloped, 10 contain single-family residences and one has an existing child daycare facility, according to county staff.

The recommendation from staff comes following a detailed review by the county’s planning commission after receiving a request to rezone one of the parcels for office use for a future medical office.

One of the recommendations is that as the future office plans are developed that sidewalks be built to connect to existing ones in the area. Doing so will increase pedestrian access for nearby residential subdivisions, particularly to the Starr’s Mill school complex nearby, according to County Planning and Zoning Director Pete Frisina.

In other business, the county is expected to consider a request to allow weddings and events as a conditional use in the agricultural-residential (AR) zoning category. That request is from two residents who want to use their hay farm as an occasional event facility to host farm-themed weddings as they become more popular.

Also up for approval is a $1.64 million contract to purchase asphalt from E.R. Snell Contracting of Tyrone. The company has agreed to extend the current contract with the county at the same price.
