Merchants award $250 Art For The Heart prize to Oak Grove

Peachtree Crossing merchants and Oak Grove students.

Taking time to beautiful the community while recognizing the importance of art in the Fayette County schools was a priority for the merchants in Peachtree Crossing and Peachtree Point Shopping Centers in March. Since the closing of the baby Kroger store over a year ago at the corner of Hwy 54 and Peachtree Parkway, the front windows of the store have been covered in black plastic, giving the appearance of a great black hole in the heart of Peachtree City.

The merchants of Peachtree Crossing and Peachtree Pointe decided that their shopping center deserved better and took it upon themselves to find a way to bring life back to those windows. The result was the Art Form The Heart Mural Contest.

Fayette County elementary schools including Braelinn Elementary School, Cleveland Elementary School, Crabapple Elementary School, Kedron Elementary School, Oak Grove Elementary School, Peachtree City Elementary School, Peeples Elementary School, Spring Hill Elementary School and Tyrone Elementary School, were asked to submit a mural with the theme “life in Peachtree City”.

These murals were hung in the Kroger windows for the month of March and parents came to vote for their favorite mural. The winning mural was from Oak Grove Elementary School.

On April 22, the merchants of Peachtree Crossing and Peachtree Pointe presented Lori Thomas, Art Teacher from Oak Grove elementary with the winner’s check of $250 to be used in the schools art program. Over 30 students from Oak Grove Elementary showed up to support their teacher and principal as seen in the attached photo. The business community was out in force to show their support for our schools.
