Despite past opposition, commissioners OK West Bypass

It came with a significant caveat, but the Fayette County Commission on March 14 voted to complete the construction on Phase 2 of the West Fayetteville Bypass.

The irony is that all five commissioners have vehemently opposed what each previously called “the road to nowhere” at one time or another during the past three years.

The motion to complete Phase 2, to save money by having the roundabout at the bypass intersection with Ga. Highway 92 reworked as a traffic signal and to eliminate the Phase 3 portion of the bypass project south of Ga. Highway 54 was accompanied by a unanimous vote.

Chairman Steve Brown in a prepared statement noted his longtime opposition to the bypass project. But after consulting with legal and engineering staff on the Phase 2 portion of the project that extends from Sandy Creek Road to Hwy. 92, Brown suggested the county move forward with the completion of Phase 2 to avoid a lawsuit based on breach of contract with the project contractor since so much of the work on the project has already been completed.

Brown said former commissioners Herb Frady, Lee Hearn and Robert Horgan along with former County Administrator Jack Krakeel initiated “irresponsible” and “inappropriate” actions that led to the construction of Phase 2 where 10 parcels of property are still in the condemnation phase.

But given the liability to the county with so much of the construction already completed, Brown said it would be better to complete Phase 2 rather than face the potential for litigation.

The remainder of the paving for Phase 2 from Eastin Road to Hwy. 92 is expected to be completed in May, Brown added.

Brown as a further reason for finishing the project said portions of the road bed already completed but not yet paved would erode and cause environmental problems that would become expensive to clean up if the project is not completed.

Commenting on the issue just prior to the unanimous vote, Commissioner Charles Oddo said it would be a waste of taxpayers’ money to stop the second phase construction.

An area resident speaking on the agenda item asked that commissioners consider some type of visual screening along the roadway once the project is completed.

None of the commissioners mentioned during the discussion that the “road to nowhere” has become a road to Pinewood Studios, a potentially massive economic boost to all of Fayette County when it opens by this time next year, if the commission approves its rezoning within weeks.

The 288.5 acre tract abuts the bypass, known as Veterans Parkway, and Sandy Creek Road in the center part of the county.

Changing the roundabout saves $800,000 according to the information I received from the County Administrator.

americanpatriots: Get a clue already

When you want to respond to someone, reply right under what they already posted. It's not that hard to figure out and you're hardly so special that you and the other boneheads like ginga and pips have to post under the original article that has ZERO to do with what you're responding to.

This is real simple and yet you have no damn idea or seem to think your comments are so awesome that they need to be in the front of the line regardless of the fact that what you responded to is about 20 comments below.

Thanks for participating....not.

So, is there really going to be a Pinewood with the humongous

project that has just been approved in Savannah, or is this just a ploy to get that West Bypass passed? Seems odd that anyone would sink that kind of money into a project when something along the same lines is going in so close. According to today's AJC the Savannah studio has been approved and is a done deal. Is there roon and a big enough draw for both?

Medient Studios in Effingham County

Seems there is an memorandum of understanding for that project, as is what is on the books here for Pinewood.

If you check out Medient, the promises have to do with housing, shopping, a self-sustaining community with no carbon-producing vehicles, health care and schooling for workers and their families. This will be the first film studio for this company. They will employ solar and hydro power. This whole thing sound like some weird Bollywood thing. The studio you work for will control you..you live there, work there, educate your kids there and probably die there, too. They will have sound stages, post-production suites, and housing for visiting talent. Eight movies a year, their own writers, directors, designers, etc. They are going to offer tours to the public.

To hear about Pinewood, their reputation is that they are the Rolls Royce of the studio world. Medient, probably a Club Car wannabe.

Pinewood will have no housing. They will have facilities they will rent out to production companies and vendors. No public tours.

These tax breaks the state is handing out is flooding this state with who knows what that want to be the next Paramount or Universal.

These unincorporated counties better get their acts together to know who/what they are dealing with before spending millions on taxpayer paid infrastructure for what could be an entity that either folds or doesn't produce a fraction of what they are "promising".

The only negative that might hit the Pinewood deal (between the 2) that I can see is that Medient has said they plan to use SCAD to provide talent. They will be 16 miles north of Savannah. If SCAD does that, does that mean they won't want to come to Fayette?

Unless there is information that is not out there, if the choices are Medient or Pinewood, I'd take Pinewood any day.

Now really, how can we pass up Chairman Brown having a jolly old time in Londontown do a photo op welcoming the Brits here? Can't you see him and Matt Forshee having tea and crumpets together in their suite at Claridge's Hotel? Jolly good.

!The Indians are comming to Savannah!

moelarrycurly is right. You people need to look closer at what you are talking about. This is an INDIAN group....as in from INDIA. If they are going to have 1200 jobs, likely they will go to a lot of Indians they bring over.

"This whole thing sound like some weird Bollywood thing. The studio you work for will control you..you live there, work there, educate your kids there and probably die there, too" (like when they bring them over to work in the hotels they buy and they live there 24/7)

Pinewood is indeed the Rolls here. Also as Curly stated, "The only negative that might hit the Pinewood deal (between the 2) that I can see is that Medient has said they plan to use SCAD to provide talent. They will be 16 miles north of Savannah. If SCAD does that, does that mean they won't want to come to Fayette? " That might be a problem, but in the end, who would you rather work for, Pinewood or Medient? I think that is a no brainer.

suggar..you are too

funny. Did you have some coffee with your sugar this morning?:)

Please realize we have some beautiful hotels here in Fayette County that are owned and operated by Indian ancestry families. In the US, the majority of hotels are owned by Indians. And no, most don't live in the hotels.

Also, India is the largest producer of movies in the world. My point is that the company coming to Effingham County has never had a studio before. This is their first one. Rookies. They have an agreement from the county to build $1.2 million in infrastructure already. Compared to Pinewood, a proven and extremely well run and profitable company. If anyone wants to compare who got the better deal, well, I think it's obvious.

Hopefully, both will get off the ground and prove to be a benefit to their/our counties. I'm sure Paula Deen is working on a plan right now to cash in, you think?

Sweetfeet & Hotels

Understand. I used to stay at a Holiday Inn in Tarboro, NC, whose franchise was owned by an East Asian. On one visit,I noticed that Old Glory being flown was tattered & torn. When I complained, the Manager told me that he had told the owner, who said one was "on order". All they had to do was walk across the street to Walmart and buy one for $18.00! Talking later to the Maintenance man,who was a Vet like me) he flat stated that the owner didn't care. After this happened twice, I sent a scathing letter to Holiday Inn Corporate. For whatever reasons, that guy lost the franchise and the place is now a Days Inn!

way to go Athomegym

There are people who do some prettys shotty hotel things to save a buck. I won't stay in them. Hamtpon Inn is always clean, so are the Hiltons (most of the time) and the Marriotts. The are still American owned. I wouldn't like the deal about the flage either. My ex died from war wounds from Viet Nam, my Daddy was in WWII, We fought on the right side of the Civil War (we lost), and the Rev war!

No Roundabout!?!?!

Come on guys! That really is a bad decision. That is a gateway to the county from the north. It also is so so so so so so so much better for the flow of traffic than another stupid light.

Bad move folks.

Agreed on the roundabout

They work much better than a light or stop sign.
