Local citizens spearhead aid for Adairsville tornado victims

Residents of Adairsville will get a helping hand from Fayette County residents on Feb. 23 when a local group will caravan to the northwest Georgia town to bring needed items to the city after the area was hit by a devastating tornado Jan. 30.

The town of approximately 4,650 residents in Bartow County near Interstate 75 was struck by a tornado on Jan. 30 that did extensive damage to the community. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is not offering assistance but Fayette County will, organizers said. The group of Fayette volunteers will caravan to Adairsville on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 8 a.m. after assembling at Peachtree City Christian Church.

The humanitarian effort by “Operation Citizens of Fayette County” needs volunteers and a variety of items to transport to the tornado-ravaged community. Organizers are asking for donations to help residents who have lost everything. And the list of needs is long.

A sampling of the needed items includes all kinds of kitchen and household items, cleaning items and supplies, linens and bathroom items, personal hygiene supplies, yard tools and non-perishable foods along with drinks in plastic bottles. Also being requested are monetary donations to be delivered to Peachtree City Christian Church.

Organizers said non-perishable dog and cat food is also needed, as is someone to organize this aspect of the effort.

Drop-off locations include Peachtree City Christian Church located at 500 Kedron Drive and First Baptist Church of Fayetteville located at 235 East Stonewall Avenue. PTC Christian can be contacted at 770-487-9711 and First Baptist in Fayetteville can be contacted at 770-719-9599 or at www.fayettevillefbc.org

Countdown to Adairsville

From Cherie Werginz:
We are so excited to have so many good people here in Fayette County that have donated items for this project. Dot Ensley and I are over-whelmed, yet feeling very, very blessed and claim this project to be a big success! The people of Adairsville will have items to stock 3 rooms in their homes when they return to them. We have one truck load of pet food also!

The plan is to drive up, with one stop up and get to the Adairsville Church of God around 11am where we will be met by Adairsville officials and folks to help unload. Chick-fil-A (North Fayetteville) has provided vouchers for us to have a sandwich at the Chick-fil-A at a surrounding city.

Spearheading the caravan are; PTC Christian Church Pastor George Dillard and Fayetteville Baptist Church Assist Pastor Greg Stringham. FC officials; Mayor of Fayetteville Greg Clifton, PTC Councilman George Dienhart, Fayette Commissioners Randy Ognio, Allen McCarty and David Barlow are also coming.

It's tomorrow, Saturday, February 23, at 8am and leaving from the Peachtree City Christian Church at 500 Kedron Drive, it's the one with the red roof. Should be back at the church mid-afternoon.

Let's show Adairsville that Fayette County Citizens care! Plan to caravan with us!

SAD but true

I have been keeping up with this project. Some of the items that have been dropped off was a broken dirty coffee pot, 1 band-aid box, 1 opened paper plate package, 1 cracked dish, and 1 box of straws. A Peachtree City donor wanted them to pick up a broken washing machine. Another wanted someone to come pick up her old clothes and wanted someone to wash them. Incredible.

Several of the Adairesville folks have been living in tents, or in unfurnished apartments. Everything they had was destroyed and they have no money to replace essentials. Their lively hood was destroyed.

Help this project succeed join a great humanitarian effort for our own rural Georgia!

Caravan leaving this Saturday, Feb. 23 at 8am from the Peachtree City Christian Church and there is plenty of room.

Great humanitarian effort to join

Cherie is a friend of mine and I received the request by email. Their efforts are also to have the largest caravan filled with citizens of Fayette County. I know there are at least 2 church buses and vans confirmed right now. Both Cherie and Dot are good people with big hearts! Please help them to succeed in this great humanitarian operation to Adairsville.

Operation CFC Assisting Adairsville & Surrounding Cities
Citizens of Fayette County, FEMA refuses to help Adairsville so it looks like they need a rescue from our good citizens of Fayette County. We are caravaning to Adairsville on Saturday, February 23 at 8 a.m. leaving from the Christian Church of PTC. Pastor George Dillard from the Christian Church of Peachtree City is hosting item drop offs and will take monetary donations. Associate Pastor Glen Stringham of the First Baptist Church will also host item drop offs and will take monetary donations. We are asking for new items for these desperate people who have lost everything. Operation Citizens of Fayette County’s mission is to stock these families with new, clean items as they go back to their homes.
Suggestions and locations:
Big Lots: coffee pots, irons, toasters, small electric clocks, flat ware, pots and pans, mops and brooms, any type of cleaning supplies including soap powder. With the cold weather here, the people of Adairsville are in need of blankets of all sizes, sheet sets, pillows, bed spreads, mattress covers, bath towels, and wash cloths.
Dollar Store: drinking glasses, dishes, face tissue, soaps, hand cleaners, shampoo,
body lotions, paper towels, bath tissue, tooth paste, tooth brushes, aspirin, Ibuprofen, arthritis therapy, and band aids.
Tools: Gentleman - rakes, shovels, hoses, and any other tools you’re not using would benefit greatly.
Food items: tin can foods, plastic drink bottles, but nothing breakable; tin can coffee, plastic powder coffee creamers, tea bags, honey, Coke and Pepsi products in plastic bottles only. Drinking water has been supplied to the county recently.
Animal items: dog and cat food nonperishable is needed. If anyone can help organize this, please contact us immediately.
In these poor economic times, especially with FEMA not assisting, let’s bring together our love for humanity. Please help as one never knows when Fayette County would be in this horrible situation with destruction throughout; wouldn’t we also need friends?
